I haven't decided yet if s5 beats s4 as my favourite season but it definitely beats s1, s3 and s2, which is the order of the rest of my list. I really loved it. Jon, Cersei, Stannis and Sansa's arcs in particular. I just rewatched the Stannis and Jon scenes and man do they hit the mark. So tragic and sad. They definitely had a great chemistry between them. |

^Especially when you consider that if Jon had've taken Stannis's offer, they'd both have lived and probably defeated the Boltons.

I know a lot of people don't have the time but rewatching is crucial, I think, for evaluating how each episode and each season ranks from strongest to weakest. Sometimes if you watch something only once you can reject something unduly because of your gut reaction to it. More viewings and allowing a bit of time to pass can make this sort of thing come together a little clearer.

Hardhome was the best episode this season by far. Or rather, the Battle at Hardhome was one of the best scenes they ever did.
As for Episodes 1 to 7, I don't know how to rate them, because they were very underwhelming to me, all of them. Don't get me wrong, there was some good stuff in them, like that one Shireen and Stannis scene at Castle Black, or Maester Aemon using one of my favourite quotes from the books, "Egg, I dreamed that I was old." But there was also a lot of bullshit, like for example killing off Barristan Selmy in Episode 4, Dorne ('nuff said), Jaime being a freaking wuss, who has nothing in common with the character from the books that I love and count among my favourites, Loras being a gay stereotype and nothing more, etc.
"A Dance of Dragons" and "Mother's Mercy" were just bad. They did all these huge scenes without any rhyme or reason. From the writing alone (disregarding acting, effects and production value), these two were the worst episodes of this entire series, in my opinion. No matter how much they have deviated from the books in previous seasons and episodes, nothing has ever felt more like bad fanfiction to me, than these two episodes.

Hardholme and The High Sparrow were the best episodes of the season. For the most part, season 5 was underwhelming to me.
