So the walkers at hardhome were a little different from season 2 Were these not White Walker scouts that we have seen before but one of Craster's sons? or more similar to the night's king type of breed, part of the 'thirteen' we saw in season 4. Their skin looks more human and they have clothes.

I think these are a different breed, like the Night's King.
ETA: I meant for the character pictured in the OP. As for the mass of Wights, I agree with Laurya that the different Wights are different stages of decay.

I honestly think it's nothing more than just a style change, or at least an attempt to individualise them since until now, other than the NK, all the WWs looked the same.

I agree with Fire and Blood. They seem to be really fleshing them out now that they are taking a more prominent role in the story.

I suppose the different wights show different stages depending on how they were when the white walker got them. The skeletons are buried wildlings, the more complete ones were resurrected shortly after their death and so on.

The other white walkers thought they were members of a shirtless rock band. This one thinks he is a Michelin tire.

yeh i absolutely loved that scene how his presence was so cold it blew out the fires. its an awesome picture i don't think they just changed the design of the WW. It makes no sense because in season 4 we saw a WW take crasters child, one that looked exactly like the ones from season 1 and 2. But he took the child to the Night's King who had 12-13 other beings dressed like him. these 'others' must be a different kind of white walker. The first onees we saw are like scouts and soldiers, but the ones dressed in clothes are higher level, they might even be controlled by one person, the nights king! It doesn't make much sense either for ice beings to 'decay'. Wights are living flesh and once they are turned wights in the books they do not decay further. This may not be it in the show but in my mind the wights who look like skeletons are just wights resurrected at a later stage of decay than other dead people. btw im referring to this in season 4 i.ytimg.com/vi/h55PRP9sRyc/hqdefault.jpg

I'm going to jump in with the debate team that thinks these were a bit more important White Walkers because they were in direct company of the Night's King so it seems to me they're his "lieutenants" which is a term you hear Benioff use directly in the "Inside the Episode" video HBO always puts out right after the show.
These were more like boss White Walkers while some of them we've seen in the past (season 1 and the ones leading the undead army through the forests) seemed like lesser walkers in the army. I think they are quite sentient and have a very distinct social structure - the baby changing ceremony reinforced that theme. They are not just mindless frozen monsters and have extraordinary powers. The armor they're wearing is also similar to what we saw in the baby changing ceremony and further 'humanizes' them a bit more than mindless wights which are the undead they raise for their army.

it makes even more sense for them to be sentient beings when you think about who the night's king is rumuored to be. A stark who fell in love with an 'ice woman' if i recall correctly??
Starks are wargs-> i also think this has something to do with it. The Night's king seemed to recognise something in Jon. He saw that he had a valyrian blade, commanded the night's watch and had stark-like features. He probably understood he might be from the stark line and a possible warg. (okay maybe its just me who thinks wargs will be important, but i think varamyr's chapter confirms that they will)

Arya had wolf dreams, Jon could warg but fought against it ... they've done nothing with it (other than MIA Bran) and it's been a disappointment to me much as the lack of Stoneheart is to others I guess. The Night's King may not know exactly who Jon Snow is, but he probably has a pretty good idea or sense for it. The look they had him give Jon was very meaningful and to me conveyed more than just "Come at me, crow" as the meme goes haha. There's more to it. I cannot wait to find out what!

yeh we've never seen one of these lieutenants die, maybe it was a combination of the valyrian steel and jon being...who jon is. of targaryen blood....i can only hope!
everyone is going to be devastated at the end of this season, the impending doom is now clearer than ever.

I saw a costumes featurette for s4 where D and D or Michelle Clapton or someone explained that the WWs knew that Sam had killed one of them and that they were wearing armour now (in the 404 scene) to protect themselves against dragonglass. To bad for them, as Pycelle put it in ep. 402, "Nothing cuts like Valyrian steel." So it made short work not only of the WW in question but also his anti-dragonglass armour.

probably when she gets to westeros. no one is by her side that believes in them. tyrion went to the wall but he is a skeptic
Exactly its not just what they are wearing but how different they look compared to the average WW
just noticed the second picture isn't showing anymore...ill try and fix that

Ooooo, I love that! I'm such a geek for symbolism and they've been known to sneak in some good ones on the show. I've heard a lot of people in reviews asking what the symbol on his armor meant and this is an amazingly good interpretation of it! I'd love to hear some official word from the costume crew at HBO!

And that also kind of explains what the White Walkers might have been up to in between the Fist of the First men battle and Hardhome. It could have taken that long to make themselves a bunch of armor. I really like that there are only a few White Walkers and they seem to take each White Walker death seriously.
