I read some of that in the speculation thread. Interesting that some people think she's going to abandon her mission and go after Trant instead. I think they've clearly laid it out that she's going to do the deed with the poisoned oysters. The promos are famous for throwing people off. She has a momentary flash of concern or some other emotion in one of those quick shots and people are assuming that means she's going to end up doing something else. We'll see, but I predict she'll kill the target as planned and then see Trant at or around the same time and go after him without authorization from her boss. I guess the people who saw the supposed flash of concern missed the huge grin on her face that she had as she walked away once she knew Jaqen couldn't see her anymore. She's looking forward to her first assignment. I loved that devilish grin she gave - it was perfect. It lets us know she's all about this role she's been given and will perform her work without fail. She's smart and has the ability to kill without flinching (all of her needle kills thus far). She does have some issues to work out in how she kills (her emotional kill at the Inn with Sandor) and that's what her training here will do. She's shedding the last bits of her over-emotional attachments to revenge. She'll still get her revenge but she'll do so with calculated accuracy instead of emotion which causes mistakes. LOVE this theme, one of my favorites in the books!

There are likely situations where they do work for reasons more closely aligned to why Varys does what he does is my thought on that. Political goals are never easy to sort out and I have a feeling the Faceless Men have to have a certain motivation to take on a 'contract' of the sort you mentioned (if that's how Balon was offed). I don't think they just take contracts from the highest bidder either - that would be far too simple and make them much less mysterious. PS: Thank you for the great photo comparisons - much easier to see than trying to re-watch the scenes individually. Definitely looks like the same guy to me! I agree with that, the FM are very careful with the "high-profile" targets they accept, I think they would never go after someone if that means bad news for them or the city of Braavos itself, maybe even the Iron Bank. They have their own agenda, is just bloody frustrating not knowing what that agenda is. And you're welcome for the pics, I love THOBAW set, they really have done an incredible job, but I think the sets will be as creepy as they are now with a bit more of light, sometimes is really hard to see what is going on there

Yeah, but in the books they seemed to care about the hit being done right. Maybe is because we don't see how the FM really work, but notJaqen's comment about how the many-faced god doesn't doesn't really care worries me. Is he saying he doesn't care if Arya is caught and dies? or is he saying he doesn't really care if Arya is just pretending she wants to become no-one? It just looked suspicious to me, because it gave the impression notJaqen agreed with the Waif about Arya not being ready, and yet he doesn't give a crap. I agree that Jaqen doesn't care about Arya's life. I think he has a "sink or swim" approach to her training. I don't like the theory that Sirio was a FM and that the FM specifically targeted Arya for recruitment. I get why a female warg Stark could be a great asset to them, but it really downplays her own successes and suffering if she was being groomed and protected by an assassin cult the whole time. So I like this portrayal of the FM barely caring about Arya, and she really is making her own way in the world. In the books Jaqen gives her the coin and tells her how to use it, pretty much the same as the show. The fact that she finds her own way , even survives to get there, does not downplay her successes it enhances them. As if the FM made a test of her getting to Braavos. You know even Tom Wlaschiha brought up the idea , in an interview, as to why were the FM interested in Arya. He takes his role in the story with some import. I am glad they made him the Kindly Man if only for distinctive speaking voice!

In the Ugly Little Girl the Kindly Man has Arya 'case' the Thin Man for a week , he wants her to be very clever in how she makes the hit. In the book the insurance guy has two body guards. The FM do give her a 'Face'. When she does the job no one see's Arya. She is very clever. Seemingly she gave the guy a poisoned coin , but GRRM gives the hint that the guy had a heart attack before he even bit it! She slipped him a House of Black and White coin and maybe the guy died of fright! If that's true it's very clever.
"The kindly man was waiting for her at the House of Black and White, seated on the edge of the temple pool. The ugly girl sat next to him and put a coin on the lip of the pool between them. It was gold, with a dragon on one face and a king on the other. “The golden dragon of Westeros,” said the kindly man. “And how did you come by this? We are no thieves.” “It wasn’t stealing. I took one of his, but I left him one of ours.” The kindly man understood. “And with that coin and the others in his purse, he paid a certain man. Soon after that man’s heart gave out. Is that the way of it? Very sad.” The priest picked up the coin and tossed it into the pool. “You have much and more to learn, but it may be you are not hopeless.” That night they gave her back the face of Arya Stark. They brought a robe for her as well, the soft thick robe of an acolyte, black upon one side and white upon the other. “Wear this when you are here,” the priest said, “but know that you shall have little need of it for the present. On the morrow you will go to Izembaro to begin your first apprenticeship. Take what clothes you will from the vaults below. The city watch is looking for a certain ugly girl, known to frequent the Purple Harbor, so best you have a new face as well.” He cupped her chin, turned her head this way and that, nodded. “A pretty one this time, I think. As pretty as your own. Who are you, child?” “No one,” she replied. "

" Sadly they aren't conveying nearly the same level of cleverness on the show as much as I adore the scenery of Braavos and Arya's outfit and great acting. There's speculation she won't even kill the insurance man and will abandon her job to go and kill Trant instead. I'm hoping that's not how it plays out because I feel it will really lessen the importance of her 'training' and fast forward her to where she's just going back to vengeful Arya. Hopefully this all plays out better on the show and the importance of the House of Black and White is emphasized more clearly. Seems most viewers didn't understand the scene much and of course it was overshadowed immensely by all the other shocker stuff such as Theon's confession, Cersei licking water off the ground and being her usual hateful self, Dany and Tyrion talking and of course the last half of the episode blowing everyone away with Hardhome. I'm not dismissing any of those scenes, they were amazing and I'm ecstatic over the episode. Unfortunately Arya's stuff really just got buried.

The conversation between the Waif and notJaqen fucked me up. Why would Jaqen give her a target if she is not ready? does he want her to fail her training? and I can't tell if the Waif was jealous or concerned. I'm really confused about the FM right now. In the books Arya is only given the assignment after quite a bit of FM 'boot camp'. Even then the FM 'Council' only grudgingly let her do the 'hit'. Even then Arya has to devise a method of giving the Gift. So it's even a bigger test. This episode had everyone making difficult decisions. Jon had to make the free folk allies of the Night's Watch. Cersei decided not to confess. Dany decided to trust Tyrion and banish Jorah. Jorah, in turn, decided to volunteer for the pit fight. The Kindly Jaqen chose to advance Arya in her training. I don't think there's any larger lesson about the Faceless Men in that decision. She gave him the details of her day, and she correctly identified the insurance man as a fraud. That seems to have been the test, and she passed.

Why did they change "Cat" to "Lanna"?

Why did they change "Cat" to "Lanna"? People would think that "Cat" hints at Stonehart. D&D are trolling her fans with "Lanna" two episodes before Mother's Mercy.

I'm starting to think there is some true to D&D changing little details that the fans would love to see in the show just to fuck with us.
Changing the name from Cat to Lanna may have been, as others have suggested, to avoid hints to LSH, either because they will include her or because they won't and naming her Cat might have lead to some speculation. Personally, I think they did it because maybe Jaqen was the one who created the identity for Arya, maybe she didn't use Cat because Jaqen may have guessed why she wanted to use that name or maybe it is because the Lanna identity is not as important in the show as Cat was in the books.

Maisie nailed every part of that scene. It was a-Maisie-ing.
