"Premonition" from FF8 is amazing: It perfectly fits the theme of 'evil' sorcery, that runs through the whole game. I know, FF8 is extremely controversial, but it is among my favourite games, just because I find the lore amazing and I'm fascinated with all the sorceresses one encounters throughout the game (the four women depicted on that fanart in the video). FF8 is controversial??? I never really got that from people. But maybe because I never finished it. I'll have to listen to the song when I get on WiFi...

Yeah, sadly, it is. I mean, it's not as controversial as for example FF13, a game almost universally hated by everyone, but there are surprisingly many people who dislike FF8 (my brother is one of them - he loves the FF series as much as I do, but he fiercly hates FF8 ). And it's not so much the story that is the problem (although I've heard complains about that as well) - the main issue with FF8 for most people seems to be the gameplay, and honestly, I can kinda see why that is. Although I personally like the "Draw"-system used in FF8, which allows the player to draw magic from enemies and to "junction" it to the characters to increase their stats, what this amounts to is basically a lot of busy work. Spells become sort of like items, you can only carry a limited number. You also feel really discouraged from using magic at all, because if you do, your stats go down again. I enjoy the gameplay of FF8 regardless of all that, because it allows for tons of customization, but a lot of people don't, and I can understand why. In terms of story though, FF8 really doesn't do much wrong. As is true for most Final Fantasy games, there are some convoluted and strange plot elements (in FF8's case, time travel, sorcery, monsters from the moon falling down on earth in regular intervals) - but the most important thing for me are the characters, and they're written really great in this game (imho). At the heart of FF8, there is a very sweet, very believe love story between the two main characters, Squall and Rinoa, and that's where the game really shines, in my opinion. Also, the lore is fascinating, the soundtrack is divine and the art style is beautiful. And two more great songs from FF8, "The Extreme": "Maybe I'm a Lion":

^^^ yeah I remember not really liking the battle system. I remember people saying the game was easier if you stayed at low levels on purpose or something? I guess that's why I didn't bother after my disc broke. But its a shame I did want to finish the story. Maybe I'll pick it up on PSN one day.
FF13 has its flaws but I loved the battle system. Shrug.

Yes, that's right, all the enemies scale to your character's average level. But the thing is, "junctioning" spells doesn't have anything to do with the level of your characters, which means that the system is easily exploitable. Just keep your party at a low level, and artificially create strong magic from gaming cards (yes, that's a real gameplay mechanic ) - and you should be fine. The battle system of 13 wasn't bad, I suppose, but I would be lying if I said that I liked the story or any of the characters ...

This song had pretty much all of the games musical themes wrapped up into one song. I really thought it sounded good, definitely the best in the game.

Basil, I've played FF8 only once, because I did find the draw-system a bit tedious, but the music, the story, the lore and last but not least the characters are fantastic. This is breathtakingly sad and beautiful:

Sorry, I copy-and-pasted parts of my last post and one part of the first sentence was missing. Here, have another great song from one of my favourite games:

Hells yeah, Silent Hill. This one is also great. It doesn't really have - well, a melody, but it's fucking creepy and so full of atmosphere. I love it. Have you seen the second Silent Hill movie? It tried to adapt the third game and it just failed miserably. That movie was the worst piece of garbage I've seen in my life, and as much as I love Kit, he was really not very good. His version of Vincent was nothing like Vincent in the game, who's such an awesome character. I've no idea what they were thinking when they were making this movie, but they completely failed to capture the essence and the atmosphere of Silent Hill. It's not about gore and jumpscares, guys, Silent Hill is all about deeply disturbing, psychological horror. And can I just say, the fact that Hideo Kojima's 'Silent Hills' was cancelled is a freaking crime. P.T. was the scariest thing I've ever played in my life, and it was just a demo.

Yeah, I've seen both movies. I loved the first one and I seriously think it is one of the best video game adaptations out there. I just wish the studio had let the movie makers do their thing, because Sean Bean's character had a much, much smaller role in the original script. They originally wanted to make a movie in which all major characters were female, but the studio didn't allow that, so Christopher DaSilva's storyline was added. As much as I love Sean Bean as an actor, I hated his scenes, because they (almost) destroyed the natural flow of the story. Also, the first movie is a story about mother(s) and daughter(s) at its core. What is wrong with Hollywood that this is not considered to be a legitimate theme in itself? But that's an entirely different debate. The second movie was complete and utter bullshit. The only good part was the music, which was straight from the games anyway. You are right to say that Silent Hill is not about gore and jumpscares, but all about deeply disturbing, psychological horror. I only would like to add that it's also about depression, melancholy and the beauty of all that. The beauty of the darkest parts of the human soul. The second movie didn't grasp that AT ALL. Please don't remind me of the fact that "Silent Hills" was cancelled. I'm still in mourning. I was so hopeful to finally see another genuinely good Silent Hill game again. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of amazing western game developers, but I have yet to see them doing justice to the multilayered and deep world that is the Silent Hill universe. Silent Hill 1-3 were masterpieces, though. Kojima's Silent Hills could have been too.

Silent Hill 1-3 were masterpieces, though. Kojima's Silent Hills could have been too. I enjoyed the first movie, it really felt a lot like how Silent Hill should feel, but I didn't like the fact, that they changed so much of the story and the basic Silent Hill lore. Because the story of Silent Hill, the game, was never about god-fearing christian fanatics burning alleged witches. It's about an occult sect, attempting to birth their God into the world by impregnating Alessa Gillespie through some strange ritual. The fact that Alessa's nightmare was unleashed upon Silent Hill was really more of an unwanted by-product of the ritual, that has inflicted such pain upon her (she was basically burned alive and only survived, because "God" lived in her womb). In her suffering, Alessa unwillingly drew upon the supernatural forces that were already present in Silent Hill, and as a result of this, the entire town was transformed into hell, basically - or rather, Alessa's personal version of hell. At least that's my interpretation. In the movie, she was an innocent girl who was burned as a witch, but somehow she survived, made a deal with the devil (I guess?) and transformed the town into hell, so that she could eternally torture the people who have wronged her. The entire purpose of bringing somebody from outside to Silent Hill was so that she could get access to the church, whereas in the game, Alessa was actually trying to foil the cult's plans to birth their God. And also the movie did this whole many different dimensions thing (Otherworld, Fog World) - I don't think this was the original intend of the game. I think there is only one Silent Hill, but it transforms and changes. I also don't think the supernatural forces in Silent Hill are inherently evil. The town calls people to it, who already have deep psychological issues and it manifests in a way to reflect that. It's almost kinda like a sick version of therapy in a way, because if you survive Silent Hill, you most certainly will either commit suicide, or be able to let go of your issues and start over. I find this stuff fascinating and although the movie by itself worked really well (and yes, it is definitely one of the better movies based on video games) - I think it's a bit of a shame, that all these other aspects of Silent Hill were lost.
