"How many children did Scarlett O'Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: she was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story. There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one. And for just as long, I have been talking about the butterfly effect. Small changes lead to larger changes lead to huge changes. HBO is more than forty hours into the impossible and demanding task of adapting my lengthy (extremely) and complex (exceedingly) novels, with their layers of plots and subplots, their twists and contradictions and unreliable narrators, viewpoint shifts and ambiguities, and a cast of characters in the hundreds." You can find the blog post here.

Fairly consistent of him, he's essentially been saying the same thing since the very beginning. In fact, think he's used that Scarlett O'Hara comparison many times. Honestly, I think I'd prefer it if he gave an actual opinion on the show every so often, it would be interesting.

Though that's just my speculation and opinion.

I personally think that's more of a strategy to make his fans think he's writing, but I am a cynic

I think GRRM has just given us a masterclass on how to sidestep an issue.

I think he learned from the massive controversy over the Oberyn Martell casting. There he actually gave some thoughts, but ended up being lambasted over it. Ever since then he's been doing this when outrage erupts. I think he may have posted something exactly like this when the Sept Scene happened.

He goes on about the butterfly effect again.

How many children did Scarlett O'Hara Catelyn Stark have...? ...raped while their childhood friend watched? How many children did Robert of the House Baratheon have? "Six-and-ten for him" in the books, twenty in the show.

"Six-and-ten for him" in the books, twenty in the show. Honestly, that's a good change, because it shows that the writers are aware of the kids being aged up has ramifications. Robert would be whoring for a longer period, ergo, more bastards. ------------------ My point was more, there is a difference between cutting the number of children down to save time, and changing the story so one of the children gets raped.

I like GRRM's response here. He's not the one writing the episodes at this point and he is not involved in the day to day decisions on the show. He's too much of professional to really be anything other than supportive of the show (in his own way). If he came out and said what happened last night was a terrible idea, can you imagine the media controversy? He answered the best he could. The show is the show, the books are the books. He can answer for the books but it's not fair, at this point, to have him answer for the show.
