Cant say I blame them. Im harsh on the show, but a lot of it falls to George's writing Tread carefully here. I'm not suggesting theres anything bad about it, but I remember hearing something abiut George claiming the books were written with the idea that they wouldn't be adapted. Mereen seems massively to hint this. I mean it's a massive story, and to devote fully to it would mean cutting back on everything else. So yeah, I can see why a lot of stuff is being cut. I just would of liked more Barristan, especially after the Dany scene where they discussed Rhaegar. They were onto something good there I bolded your comment here...GRRM has a history in writing shows for television, he wrote Beauty and the Beast that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman and has said that he wrote his books with the idea that the only limit on them would be his imagination as result of dealing with network constraints on television shows. So, yes, the books in some aspects are difficult to adapt. I see the show as streamlining plots to get to an end. As they are looking at wrapping things up in either 7 or 8 seasons. Some of their choices, I will be okay with and some I will complain about. But you are going to see more characters taking the place of others and some of them are going to have their fates changed or meet their fate earlier than expected. I am sorry to see Barristan to go, I liked the actor and character, but once Tyrion was ending up there this season I figured he was probably going go somehow.

Oh yeah, I know he wrote tv back in the 80's and 90's. I just remember a comment that he never intended for his series tp be adapted, mainly because his experience showed him it would be near impossible to get this kind of result on a regular tv budget, and still very difficult on GoT's budget now... Yeah, I see characters replacing others. I have a few pet theories like Bronn/Arys Oakheart, Loras/Margaery (to do with Cersei's accusations, though this is already as good as confirmed so...) Brienne/Mance (episode 5 trailer seems to say yeah, havent watched ep 5 till tommorow, English viewing times and what not) Davos/pretty much all of Stannis' knights and advisors like Richard Horpe, Justin Massey, you know, the ones who aren't dicks. Ellaria Sand/Arianne Martell. Seems obvious. Alliser Thorne/Cotter Pyke, thoigh I expect Pyke's job goes to Jon in Hardhome anyway. Thats all for now, and mainly just from how the field is set up atm. Could change pretty quickly, depending on what route D&D take. I'll be honest, knowing some things are cut is a bummer, but anticipating the new scenes is definitely something to look forward to!

I don't think George ever said that, he did say he had been approached by several film makers but did not like their ideas. Without being in the biz , just being a viewer , I well understand that, there have been awful adaptations of prose fantasy and worse for prose science fiction. Funny now George is talking about a big finish with a theatrical film!
