They know how the story ends. They know what happens to the characters. We don't know any of that past this season. I'd say that we are possibly the worst judges of whether or not the showrunners "understand the material". And that people pretty much say this every single time they change anything at all, no matter how minute. Basically...I think it would be more prudent to wait until we have the end of the show and the end of the books before we can say "They fucked this shit up!" I don't think the fact that they know how the story ends means we still can't suggest they don't understand the material if they make an arse of something. I mean, I haven't accused them of not understanding it outwith the hypothetical scenario where they cut Daznak, but if others feel that is the case then they are welcome to say so. And there is plenty of reason to think they don't, they were once quoted as saying that they never ever thought of cersei as a funny character until Lena read for the part (I'm on my phone so I have no receipts for this but if you want a link I'll get one later) Cersei is fucking hysterical! Well, we know that Daznak is not cut. We know that some big shit goes down. We just don't know the details of it yet. TBH, I never thought Cersei was funny, either. As much as I disliked her from an outsider's POV, I loathed her from her own. I think Martin nearly ruined her character by giving her a POV. But I don't think that my having a different opinion of a character lessens my understanding of the story.

I'm curious about something. For those who were in the fandom before ADWD's release, what was the general consensus on whether or not Daenerys would fly Drogon? Was it something that was just unanimously assumed was going to happen, or did she still have some haters even then who denied it was going to happen? I remember lots of debate about it. It seemed like the obvious conclusion since her ancestors rode their dragons. I don't remember a lot of Daenerys hate until I joined the-forum-who-shall-not-be-named which is really the first taste of true fan vitriol I had ever experienced (go figure). I was shocked by how many people despised Dany and her story and wanted her to die. I remember one or two in particular who predicted Drogon or one of the two chained ones would end up toasting her because of her failure to control them or grow to a 'proper' Targaryen. wtf. I guess the idea of a character 'evolving' and growing over time eludes some people. Odd I thought I had replied to this thread, as I had voted. I voted she flies. I think we are going to get the Dothraki Sea stuff I just don't know if it's this season revealed or not. I suspect they leave her story on the cliffhanger of her flying off and no one knows what happens next.

She will be, she's mentioned in the episode summary.

And the episode synopsis spoils her very last book moment so the only question is whether they stop there or carry forward past the books in the finale.

Yeah I honestly don't know how they will play this out tomorrow night and next week. It's confusing based on the evidence we have from the synopsis and promo stuff. Whether or not she returns to Meereen is a tough one!

I think she'll fly away next episode and land in the Dothraki sea in 510. With all the cliffhangers we're (supposedly) gonna get this season, I think Dany's is gonna have a "quieter" tone, with her landing, hopefully not eating those damn berries (with all that comes after them), and meeting her former Khalasar.
I think that's an appropriate ending for her storyline this season: you get the "what's gonna happen next?" vibe without the need of another high-tension cliffhanger.

I am sooo excited for the Dothraki Sea. Emilia is really at her best when she's acting with Drogon (as strange as it is), so I expect some very good scenes in 5.10. The contrast of Dany being surrounded by thousands of strangers in 5.09 and the intimacy of 5.10 will be special.

I agree that she'll definitely fly, and the Dothraki Sea is IMO one of the biggest cliff hangers in all the books. Can't wait to see Khal Jhoqo's face when he comes upon her with her dragon!!!! So much for his scoffing at her that she'll never have dragons. (And I hope Drogon scares the shit out of him!) I expect this in 5.10 and her flying out of Meereen in 5.09 as well. Jon's getting stabbed is the other biggest cliff hanger in all the books, IMO. Then, of course, there's the Epilogue with Pycelle/Kevin/Varys/and the children. I really hope that all of these things are covered before the end of this season. I'm SO pumped! dragon2

I like o'l Drogon's eyes going Pet-me-Mom when he recognizes who is standing before him! Yeah and it's twice now she's reached out to do so and he screeches and interrupts it. Ok this time wasn't his fault, they were pelting javelins at him. Poor Drogon! I don't think he's quite big enough to handle serious attacks yet, do you? His hide is still soft and growing and he's nowhere near the size he will be as an adult. He's like a cranky teenager right now.
