Kit, Maisie, and Sophie were all amazing tonight. Congrats Starks. It was a very Starky episode. Of them I think Sophie had the most to do.
Roose made a fine return. "Stop eating and listen" and "I'd like to read the reply" are perfect shut-the-fuck-up-I'm-better-than-you Rooseisms. Michael McElhatton really brought the creepy tonight.
And Alfie gets honourable mention, though he didn't have anything to say.
I agree Roose really brought out the ominous power trip tonight! The tension in that moment he and Sansa stared at one another was absolutely amazing and so well played by both actors.

Maise for sure, not throwing away needle My heart cried for her ... poor girl. She has nothing left in the world but that little sword. So glad they kept it true to the book and it's always remained my 'hope' that she would one day return as Arya Stark with a vengeance. Always, no matter how far down the rabbit hole she goes with the HoB&W, she reserves a tiny portion of her self identity. I was really impressed by that scene because I'd been wondering how they could pull off that tension in a wordless scene. I found myself worried she actually would throw it away.

Maisie pulled out all the stops on that one, with her tearful eyes and then they played the sorrowful Stark theme. I just...cried with her. They did a beautiful job on that scene with the setting and Arya's resolve...transformation.

Sophie Turner, mostly for her cold stare followed by a smile and "Lord Bolton".

Came here to say this. One of the pre-season reviews mentioned that Alfie had no lines in the first few episodes, which was disappointing, but that didn't stop him nailing every appearance. Outstanding acting.

All around great acting by all, you can tell how comfortable they all are in their roles now. Alfie was great, you knew what he was feeling even though he never uttered a word.

Yes, he really is an extraordinarily talented young man. Poor Reek looks like he hasn't washed or brushed his teeth in a year. haha, which is what I kept thinking when he was serving dinner to Roose and Ramsay, whew, that'd dampen your appetite, for sure!

- Sophie Turner (I thought she was really great.) - Alfie Allan (I like his "Reek" better every episode.) - Iwan Rheon and Michael McElhatton (yepp, father and son) - Gwendoline Christie telling Pod about her backstory - Jonathan Pryce - Maisie Williams - Peter and Conleth (hilarious and sad at the same time) - Lena and Nathalie (when you know what's to come for their roles, it's really beautiful to see a "sane" scene of some sorts)

A nice tribute to Michael McElhatton's performance, from one of the PTV Unsullied: (bold is mine)

Jonathan Pryce for me. His mixture of piety and danger had me mesmerized for the whole duration of the scene. And Lena is excellent here as well. She is certainly attracting a peculiar bunch to her circle of influence (Qyburn, High Sparrow), though they may prove to be too much for her in the end.
Also, I think Pryce has been studying Pope Francis' mannerisms. The resemblance is uncanny, especially in some of the gestures.

I don't think I've ever voted for Kit Harrington as a winner in any episode. I'm not as harsh on his acting as some critics but there's always actors doing twice as good as him in most of them so it's hard to compare him. I think this is the first episode I felt he really nailed his scene. Often known for a lack of emotion, he really pulled it all out during those seconds before beheading Slynt - you could see the momentary hesitation and all the thoughts going through his head in his face at that pivotal moment where the boy truly becomes a man. I enjoyed this spotlight from Kit and how he compares it to when Robb had to behead Karstark - YES. Both of them had to go where their Father before them went. Envie, I totally agree with you about Kit last night. I am not usually a fan of his acting but he did nail it. There was definite echoes of Robb beheading Karstark there and it seemed like Kit did copy some of Richard's mannerisms in his performance of that scene. I cannot narrow it down to just one (like always), so special shout out to Kit for what I consider his best performance since season 1. Maisie in that wordless scene with Needle. Sophie when she objects to the marriage proposal and her icy stare down of Bolton. Liam Cunningham in Davos's talk with Jon.

There were a lot of excellent performances in this episode. Conleith's facial expressions were golden, of course. And Iain Glenn is always excellent, even if he is only on screen for a few minutes. The standouts for me though were the Stark sisters, Sophie and Maisie killed it. And Maisie looked sooo young when she was throwing away all her stuff. Younger than she's looked since season 1 or 2. Kit was great too, I've never been someone who got the love or the hate for his performances, I usually find him pretty middling (which isn't a bad place to be), but he was good tonight. HM to Lena, ofc. Shame she lost a bit of her bite, but that's a writing issue, not a performance issue.
Excellent stuff all round.

Fine performances all around, but I was absolutely amazed that I actually felt sorry for Janos Slynt for a fleeting moment.

Excellent stuff all round. I read something once that Conleth is so good as Varys that he must really be Varys, playing himself. So true, the man's never missed a beat, IMO.

When reading the books, 99% of the characters in my head either look like the image I have in my head or some weird hybrid of my original image and their actor. Except for Varys, who is 100% show Varys, he is that good he has completely usurped my original version and I can't even remember what he looked like And omg I spelt his name wrong. Mortifying.

^In the books, I was constantly getting Bronn and Davos confused. Not any more! The show has really brought all of them to life for me. I don't even remember now what I used to think of... practically anybody!
