The hunting party half of the episode was easily the stronger part for me. Makes Robert's hunting party in season 1 look so pathetic in comparison - and it really makes this show feel like GOT S1 with a bigger budget. Another great showcase of Paddy Considine and Milly Alcock - I'm assuming they'll both only be in this season so I'm glad they're getting plenty of time to shine. The Stepstones stuff I thought was a little bit weaker; they definitely leaned into the action but I'd have preferred a few more dialogue scenes personally. Also - very very minor thing that bothered me way more than it should have: I swear Laenor was saying Dracarys weirdly, like "Dracareyis" or something. Other sporadic thoughts: - Love that the dragons have much more colour to them than in GOT. Even in the dark you could see Caraxes is blood red
- Having pointed out how great the majority of the cast are, in the interest of fairness I should point out that young Laenor seemed notably weaker - hope he's better when we next see him
- Pugs exist!

Yeah, I enjoyed the first half of the episode a lot, was a little less interested in the second half, but just because I'm not that into battles.
The whole hunt is just such a build-up of tension. Things start to get uncomfortable when Rhaenrya says nobody is there for her, get worse with the sudden and awful marriage proposal, Rhaenyra runs away, and Viserys just gets more and more drunk as the night goes on, getting more and more upset with all the politicking. Thank the gods Lord Strong was there to be an actual counselor, putting the needs of the realm above his own.
Part of the reason the battle wasn't as engaging for me was that I read the book, so I knew the outcome. Of course Daemon is going to be ok, same as Lord Corlys, and his son Laenor, and Joffrey who is the blonde guy standing next to Laenor during the war council.
Need to say, I love the costume design. I love how colorful it is, love that we get to see people wearing their family sigils, love that all the characters seem to have plenty of outfits. I love it.

The costume design shows how much the budget has increased imo. In Thrones it seemed kind of rare for different Houses to have unique armour or sigils on their clothing. I do like the touches. The books always go to length to mention how people wore their sigils on their cloaks, or embroidered in their outfits. Even stuff like Daemon's dragon helmet, which does look a little silly, is still a nice unique detail. The dragons all have unique designs as well, which is another nice detail. All the dragons in thrones seemed like the same model, just different colour and scale. Ceraxes serpentine look is very sleek and lean. Seasmoke is looking good too, for what little we saw him. I'm liking how they're playing the drama between the inactive King Viserys and the hungry Corlys/Daemon. I wonder how they are going to build into the timeskip, how much more they are going to add. The Stepstones did feel a little rushed, but there really isn't that much to work off, or really much point in padding that out. I think them playing it the way they did was fine. It's just there to set up more important things to come. The moments between Rhaenyra and Ser Criston were also a very nice touch. Especially Cole talking about how Rhaenyra made him a knight of the Kingsguard. For obvious reasons if you know what's coming.
