I dunno if i have just lost interest in the story/show as a whole but I got bored and switched off the episode halfway through. I'll give it another shot later in the week, maybe I'm just in a weird mood
edit: no rating until I actually watch it all. In the interest of fairness
edit: ok so I did watch it all now. Still not going to rate it, because mr. Thundercloud here will seem like a hater trying to rain on everyone's parade.
What I did like:
Dragonstone, scene one: excellent discussion between Varys and Dany, glad they actually addressed it rather than trying to gloss over it. Of course, its a bit stupid that the two never discussed this during their long voyage from Meereen, but I can ignore that because I understand it was done for narrative purposes.
Melisandre showing up was also good, and I thought she seemed a lot more sure of herself again, as she did in season one. Some of the dialogue seemed a bit too heavy-handed exposition (PTWP and such) but overall fine.
Dragomstone II: the war council was really good, and I loved seeing all of these big characters clashing with one another. The plan didn't seem that smart to me (we won't attack King's Landing, we'll just starve them, much more humane! Let's just sail right around the Continent in the middle of Winter...WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Not like the murderous uncle of one of my allies is based on that side of the continent...)but the scene itself was excellent. Especially loved Olenna being all bitter and cynical, which makes total sense having seen her entire family incinerated. She made some good points. And I hope Dany does more than just listen to Tyrion.
King's Landing: Cersei's plan is pretty sound, actually. This is actually something almost lifted from the books I think, regarding the rumours of Dany in Meereen. Some truth to them all, but totally ignoring any subtleties of the situation that make her not seem like a monster. But it's an effective strategy nonetheless. Also like the Kingslayer talking to Tarly about conflicting vows - who would know better, right?
Qyburn's "anti-dragon gun" was basically a ballista, right? Something that surely already exists in-universe (certainly they do in the book, and given the technological advancement in the show-verse, it would be surprising if they didn't already exist there too). An effective weapon no doubt, but a stationary skull in the dungeons of the Red-Keep is not a big ass target flying extremely fast high above you. Who could potentially melt the bolt anyway.
Didn't like:
The North: I'm finding nothing to like about the characters and conflict in Winterfell right now, sadly. And Jon is really terrible. We must share plans before meetings, unless it's me proposing the plans. Don't undermine me in front of the lords, only I can do that. We must listen to one another, unless I'm proposing the plan. *sigh* I hope Bran hurries back to Winterfell. Sansa and Jon are just tiresome right now.
Arya: I really don't think the show handles Arya well at all. They seem to have only a basic grasp of what the character is. The Hot Pie scene was just awkward, and maybe that was to show how detached she is after her experiences but ffs she was warmer to Ed Sheehan last week than she was to her old friend. Why?
The Nymeria scene was pointless. A) the show has done absolutely nothing to earn an emotional response to this reunion. Has she even been mentioned since season 1? The only emotion invoked there was a result of the connection I know exists in the books. And B) nothing came of it. It was just a huge waste of CGI budget.
Citadel: so...is Greyscale not infectious now? No-one seems particularly bothered to be spending so much time in an enclosed space with Jorah. But then I guess he grabbed Dany in the pit too so it's only infectious when plot demands it. *shrug*
Cool shout out to Maester Pylos though (the master who teaches Davis to read in the books!)
The naval battle:
Sorry, I know most of you liked it. But I didn't. The opening with the Sand Snakes talking was awful (why are they always given such bad dialogue? Mamma? Seriously? So disappointing) and then the cut to Ellaria and Asha was like cutting to some kind of porn film the dialogue was so bad. "There's about to be a foreign invasion"
As for the battle itself...well I'll reserve some judgment, as maybe it will be explained properly next week how he snuck up on them, and also exactly what damage was done to the Greyjoy/Dornish fleet (from the battle, it's not clear how much of it was destroyed. And why Greyworm's unsullied weren't with that fleet when they were heading the same way). But everything was so dark and there was so much editing that it was near impossible to see what was going on. Bonus points for killing off two sand snakes I guess. And Euron looked suitably crazy. But overall I was left feeling very meh about the whole thing.
I did like the wider shots of the destruction the attack caused, but again it's not really clear to me at this stage the extent of the loss for both sides. But I'm hoping that will be answered next week
