Interesting interview: www.dailytelegraph.com.au/blogs/game-of-moans/gregor-clegane-and-bolg-on-life-in-game-of-thrones-and-the-hobbit/news-story/475a29917efde9fe6babc20a3a70ecd3Had never heard that he only had a one season contract. Tho that’s not unusual. The implication seems to be they had no intention of Gregor being in season 2 at all. Then , as happens, need the character eventually. Tho Stevens is right , almost zero screen time. I may be miss recollecting, but thought Stevens had met with GoT production before season 2 , though it was never clear what that was about exactly. Seems Stevens said something about scheduling conflicts. This comment about a one season contract seems to point to something else. Still think Stevens could have and should have been called back for season 4 .

Kind of reminds me of the Great Jon situation, the actor had another project for season 2 and therefore the show just ax-ed the character. In this case, I always thought that Stevens got a part in the Hobbit and GoT could not work around his schedule.

Seems Stevens has been asked about the Gregor role a number of times over the last 6 years, while , as far as I know, Clive Mantle has never been approached for an interview about Great Jon.

I remembered we debated the Conan Stevens thing a lot over at westeros.org. From all of the theories and rumors, I decided that the most likely course of events was that Conan Stevens pulled out of GoT to do the Hobbit. That production was stalled and delayed with a ton of reshoots added when they decided to make it three movies instead of two. The producers of GoT were miffed that Conan wasn't available and had to look for a replacement. They went with Ian Whyte for their season two plans, but he just wasn't a great fit for the character, so they wrote him out of season three entirely.
This was a bummer for me as a Clegane fan, because the Mountain was one of my most hated characters in the book. Although he wasn't featured on page very often, characters were constantly talking about the atrocities he committed both in the present war, and the past. He feels really underdeveloped in the show as a result, and I think it took some impact away from the fight between the Mountain and Oberyn. The show should have done a better job building up what a terror this guy was for the viewing audience.
What's ironic is that Conan's character in the Hobbit was largely cut from the movie, while GoT became this huge pop culture phenomenon. He did a few interviews talking about wanting to return to the show, perhaps hoping for some kickstarter style campaign from the fans, but nobody really cared. The show is larger than any one actor, especially one who only had two scenes before peacing out for something "better." Conan made a move he thought would be best for his career, it's understandable, but he burned a bridge with the GoT team in the process. I think Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is doing a great job as the Mountain 3.0 and am glad they got a passionate guy who looks the part and clearly loves the rule. His enthusiasm for the character and show is felt heartily in his social media presence. As for Conan, I understand why the GoT producers wouldn't be interested in hiring him again, he all ready left the production for greener pastures once, they have to consider the fact that he might do it again.
