The 31% critics rating at Rotten Tomatoes really put me off seeing this film. For SF films I always check Gary Westfahl’s reviews at Locus Online. There are not that many solid SF fans reviewing films these days, the reviews at the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction are woefully late, Lucius Sheppard died in recent years, and he was very incisive. Westfahl’s reviews are always in depth with an eye towards the story, and the science in the SF. He said it was a good film, while pointing out all the seams and howlers. So I saw it. Good actors are wasted, at times, on a pedestrian narrative. First half is ok. It sure has flawed science and the ending is contrived comic book programming, the ending should have been passed around to good SF writers for some imagination. The ending hurts it but does not kill it. 110 million dollar production gave it a good production design look, tho there is too much chrome on chrome. Not really a good film, but it is not abysmal either.
My main disappointment is 110 million could have been spent on great SF prose sources material which still lies fallow.
