Love Never Dies is basically fanfiction written by female phantom fans (also known as phans), who don't understand why Christine would choose Raoul, the handsome, young and rich aristocrat, over the Phantom, a horribly disfigured serial killer who lives in the sewers beneath the opera house and strangles people he doesn't like. And yes, the Phantom is a fascinating figure and Christine was kind of into it at first, but only until the Phantom showed his true colours to her. The idea that she would go back to him and bang him (beneath a moonless sky ) is really quite ridiculous and undermines the entire plot of Phantom of the Opera. It sounds pretty freakin' ridiculous when you put it that way.

Yikes.

Another really favorite musical of mine is Jersey Boys.
I've always been a fan of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and the fact that they've managed to find actors who can get somewhat close to Valli's vocal register was amazing to me. I did not see the Clint Eastwood version of this one for the movies and the sounds of the reviews, I don't want to.

Watching the phantom of the opera movie right now ... for the lulz, and it is just as bad as I remember it, maybe even worse. I fucking hate Butler's Phantom so much. He just can't sing! What kind of madness made them cast him as the freaking Angel of Music?! And sadly Emmy Rossum as Christine doesn't work for me either, she has zero charisma. Her voice is nice, but it's thin, it sounds like she's voicing a Disney princess for a direct-to-video sequel, this is not the voice of the woman who is going to take the opera world by storm. Patrick Wilson and Minnie Driver are the best thing about this movie by far. Keep your Christine and your Phantom, gimme more Raoul and Carlotta. It's a sad day when I demand more Raoul in my life.

With Kristin Chenoweth too??? Man, I wish I could afford to see shows on actual Broadway! Saw both Hairspray movies (with Divine and John Travolta) and I absolutely loved them both.

And here the same scene in good: Point of No Return is supposed to be this intimate power play between these two characters. In a way, this is the emotional climax of the show. In the stage version it is graceful, it's seductive and sexy. Look at Sierra's face when she's singing her part, she knows what she's doing and she wants it, too. And the Phantom, who's been the aggressor the entire time... is suddenly a scared young boy, and she's got power over him. It's a total reversal of their characters, up until now Christine has been the passive one. In the film, they're just kind of standing around ... and then they are on a bridge. And the freaking dancers in the background?! Why? I don't get it.

And Gerard Butler's singing is just...

Basil a while ago I saw a video made by a Phantom of the Opera fan about why the film sucks so much, it was informative and quite entertaining: She also has videos about the general history of the Phantom of the Opera:

And Gerard Butler's singing is just... Yep. On paper, both Christine and Carlotta are supposed to be perfectly trained sopranos. The difference is that singing comes natural to Christine, her voice is young, fresh and angelic, whereas Carlotta's singing is forced and soulless. Emmy Rossum does not sound like a trained singer in this movie, but to be fair, I don't blame her one bit. She was 17 when she did Phantom, even though Christine is 21 in the stage version and is usually played by 25 to 30 year old actresses. I blame the people who cast her and Gerard Butler.

I love Lindsay Ellis, I've been watching her videos for years, ever since she started out as Nostalgia Chick. I like that she talks a lot about what went wrong with the cinematography of the Phantom movie, even though my personal reason for disliking it is primarily the casting of the two lead characters.

Sierra is almost too hot to touch. What a voice, what a woman. With an actress like that playing Christine, I totally buy the Phantom's obsession with her. I would be obsessed with her too, I already kind of am.
