I remember there was mist. Swirling mist upon a vast, glassy lake. There were candles all around, and on the lake there was a boat. And in the boat there was a man.

Trying to find a way to pay for Aladdin tickets. Kids want to go. Um, and, so do I. If I can raise baby theater geeks, it will be one of my greatest achievements as a Mom.

Not many Glindas manage to play this scene as beautifully as Annaleigh. When she announces the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, she puts on a big fake smile, but her eyes are betraying her, and she can't quite hide how devastated she really is. It's a subtle thing, especially for a stage show where it's all about big and exaggerated emotions ... but it adds another layer to her performance. It breaks my heart. Her facial expression around 7:05 ... beautiful stuff.

Well, here my little review of Wicked in Zürich. It was such a delight to see the show after so many years. We went in the moment they opened the doors to the auditorium, like half an hour before the show started ... just because I wanted to take it all in and soak in the atmosphere. Maybe I was already starting to get sick at that point, or maybe I was just too excited, but it felt very surreal for some reason. And when the show started, just the first few notes of the overture made me tear up a bit. Needless to say, I was very emotional that night. In retrospect, I was not quite blown away by the cast, just in terms of vocal performance. Amy Ross played Elphaba, and she did a damn good job acting-wise, but her singing could have been stronger. Her No Good Deed was better than her Defying Gravity, but neither blew me away in terms of singing. And I really don't like criticizing actors in a musical, she was still amazing, otherwise she wouldn't have been cast ... but it just wasn't one of the strongest portrayals of Elphaba I have ever seen. I'm sure she'll get there though, this was one of her first shows after all. I was really happy with Helen Woolf as Glinda, and the actor who played Fiyero was good too. I don't remember his name, and Fiyero is a bit of a thankless role in general, but I enjoyed his portrayal a lot. He had this like really hipster hair cut, which made me giggle a little bit, but his voice was good and he had great chemistry with both Elphaba and Glinda. Extremely disappointed with the fact that there were only like eight or nine people in the orchestra. The score of Wicked is not meant to be played by so few people, and you could totally hear the lackluster quality of the music. There has been a weird trend in Germany in the past few years to reduce the orchestra as much as possible to save money. I remember ten years ago when I saw Tanz der Vampire for the first time, there were like twenty plus people in the orchestra. Last time I saw it, it was like ten or even less. This stuff matters! To me the score is always the most important aspect of a musical, and a reduced orchestra leads to a noticable loss in musical quality. That was a pretty big bummer, but luckily, in the moment I was so wrapped in in the show, that I didn't think about it too much. Anyway, Defying Gravity is still one of the most visually impressive and beautiful scenes in any musical I've ever seen. My heart started racing and my hands started shaking when the moment was approaching, and I'm pretty sure I cried a little bit when she began to fly. It's just such a great moment, Elphaba's growth as a character, the climax of the song, the breathtaking, beautiful stage and lighting design ... and the powerful message the song conveys. It always overwhelms me with feels. It made me cry when I was 18, it made me cry today. This, and the lake scene in Phantom, are my favourite moments in theatre. I live for this stuff. Daniel liked it too. Unfortunately, we were both super tired that night and didn't discuss it as much as I would have liked to, we both fell asleep immediately as soon as we were back at our hotel. I wish we could have talked about it more while listening to the soundtrack on our drive home the next day, but I was already pretty sick at that point and too busy trying to not throw up in the car.

Not sure if this belongs here or not. Watched the live Christmas Story Broadway show on Fox last night. It was so-so but Maya Rudolph was great as the Mom. I don't know that A Christmas Story was meant to be a live show?

Seems quite unbelievable to me, I don't want to live like that. Seems quite unbelievable to me, I don't want to love like that. I just want our time to be slower and gentler, wiser, free.

Aida has some really nice music by Elton John. Elaborate Lives is by far my favourite, but I also really love The Gods Love Nubia, How I Know You and Written in the Stars.
Adam Pascal and Heather Headley are pure hotness together. His voice makes me melt.

I'm gonna see the stage version of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame next Tuesday, I just booked us two tickets. Also, rumor has it that Anastasia is coming to Germany later this year, which I'm super excited about.

NBC is airing a live version of Jesus Christ Superstar with John Legend on Easter. I might watch. My friend's teenage daughter is in her school's production of In the Heights.

I haven't seen the stage musical, but I've seen the Disney movie that it is based on. Apparently the stage show is much more faithful to Victor Hugo's novel, along with the downer ending where like every character dies. JCS is one of my favourite Webber shows, I'm really looking forward to the live TV version.
