A place to discuss Marvel's Netflix shows. To date we've had Daredevil Season One and Season Two, and Jessica Jones Season One. Most pleasing parts of these series for me were Killgrave, The Punisher and Elektra, and the Luke Cage appearance in Jessica Jones. Also, Matt and Karen is one of my favourite to ships... Coming 2017, Iron Fist starring Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell)
Coming September 2016, Luke Cage (feat. Rely from House of Cards)
(Great music choice btw) Also coming 2017, The Defenders
A third season of Daredevil has also been confirmed. Personally I would like another Season of Jessica Jones first

I can't wait to watch these upcoming Marvel shows.
I had a hard time getting into Daredevil but I am going to need to catch up on it for the Punisher. I really liked Jessica Jones and both Luke Cage & Iron Fist seem promising.

So on Friday Luke Cage will hit Netflix. I've been reading the early reviews and this sounds as if it will be every bit as good as the trailers have made it out to be. Marvel Netflix has been far superior to the Cinematic universe so far, especially in terms of villains and secondary characters, so I hope they continue the streak with Luke Cage. And Remy as a villain can only be a good thing (seriously, loved him in House of Cards).

Anyone watching? I saw the first two episodes and its great so far. Even better in that it is a cast of mainly black actors not relegated to their usual roles

Anyone watching? I saw the first two episodes and its great so far. Even better in that it is a cast of mainly black actors not relegated to their usual roles If you want to continue our talk about Luke Cage let me know here, so we don't derail the Confessions thread To spoiler or not? I'll play it safe So I have had a bit of time to reflect, and contrary to the general opinion, I actually enjoyed the latter half of the season more than the first half. I do agree that Cottonmouth was the better villain than Diamondback, by far, but I feel like Mariah and Shades made up for that, as I found both very well acted and very well rounded characters. Reiterating once again that Misty Knight and Claire Temple were highlights of this series. Such wonderful actresses (Misty had some cringey lines but the actress made them work) and both had great chemistry, not just with Luke but with the entire cast. I also enjoyed something shown rarely on mainstream TV and film - a show with a primarily black cast, dealing with a range of social issues that are relevant today. In particular, I liked the showdown in Harlem's Paradise, and how that episode demonstrated the Us v Them, retribution mentality behind police brutality, and the whole mob mentality Mariah played off to rile up Harlem against Luke. I also wish Jessica had shown up. I appreciated the references to her (Trish Talks, Mariah mentioning her in her hate-campaign) but it would have been nice to see her. I actually can't wait to see Defenders, because the Marvel Netflix shows have been wonderful, their casts have been very strong, and I can't wait to see how they all interact with each other. Disappointing aspects of Luke Cage: Diamondback, who was rather bland as a villain, and I didn't find his motivations all that convincing either. I would much rather have had some kind of hocus pip us of comic book explanation to bring Cottonmouth back. I did appreciate him being killed off though, because of what it did with Mariah. I also thought the first half of the season was too slow paced. I do like a show that takes its time, but there is a line between plodding and gently paced. There could have been a lot of condensing of the first few episodes I think, or more time spent with Cottonmouth, or some more substantial build up and explanation of Diamondback to make me care more about him.
But overall I still liked it, Current rankings would be:
JJ1>DD2=LC1>DD1

Not caught up on Luke Cage yet. Really need to get to that!!! Do hurry, we need more discussion. The more I think on this show the more I think Mariah and Shades work really well as the villains. Sure they don't appear from the outset as formidable antagonists, but this series shows them grow into the role. And I really appreciate that. I mean just contrast Mariah's interview with Thembi at her home compared with spinning things at the end to get Luke arrested. Very cunning and manipulative. Also, "I know a really good attorney" . The only question for me is who will end up getting Luke out; Matt, Foggy....or Hogarth? I mean, Hogarth was already recruiting for this kind of thing, so tempting as it might be to say Matt, it could be Foggy and Hogarth that do it

Let's hope they are the main threat in season 2

I kinda hoped Iron Fist would be a gay character, but oh well. That would have been awesome, though.

I finally finished Luke Cage! Excellent show. Absolutely loved it. I have to agree that Cottonmouth is better antagonist then Diamondback. Basically he hates Luke because their father loved Luke more? I also agree that Mariah and Shades work well as villains. Theo Rossi and Viola Davis work well together. I thought Misty Knight and Claire Temple were terrific characters. I am guessing either Matt or Foggy will get Luke out. I am guessing too that the doctor will be giving Stryker-Diamondback the same powers as Luke? I'll write more later!

I didn't realise we had a separate thread for this! Personally I think I preferred the first half of the season. I found Cottonmouth to be a much more compelling villain than Diamondback. When Mariah killed him, I expected her (plus Shades) to become the main villain after that point, like trying to stay away from the criminal world but slowly and unknowingly turning into Mama Mabel. They sorta went there at the end with her taking over the club but I expected that much sooner and without all the Diamondback stuff. I thought his motivation was possibly one of the worst of any Marvel villain in movie or tv show to date. Hating Luke and wanting to kill him because his dad liked him more? And then there was that silly suit bit at the end. It was great to see Claire have a much bigger role in this one rather than just a quick visit. Misty, Mariah and Pop were all good too - there was some excellent casting and writing for the characters (with one exception) but by far my favourite was Shades. Maybe a bit over-the-top at some points but I don't care. "What you talking about Willis?" was the funniest line in the whole show. The style was spot-on. Whoever chose that and the music deserves all the awards. When I first heard the opening score I wasn't much of a fan but by the end I was obsessed with it Like Daredevil season 2, I thought it was too uneven to give it a solid ranking: Jessica Jones > Luke Cage (1/2) > Daredevil S1 > Daredevil S2 (1/2) >>> Daredevil S2 (2/2) > Luke Cage (2/2)

I don't know how long we have to spoiler tag the Marvel shows for, so under spoilers Father of DragonsI agree that the music was spot on and a character in it's own right. I think the second half was weaker due to Cottonmouth's death and the emergence of Diamondback. It would have made more sense to have Mariah and Shades step into that role and to see her transition into another Mama Mabel. I wholeheartedly agree about the casting and the fact that Claire and Misty were both so important to the overall plot. I also think bringing the African American experience with law enforcement and crime was a good touch as well. I just wish Diamondback was either a rival drug dealer who knew Luke from prison and acquired some of his abilities...and he was jockeying to take Cottonmouth's place, rather then the motivation of "Daddy did not love me as much as you!!!"

Diamondback could've been one of the guys who was part of the prison fighting ring - like if he was the best fighter before Luke turned up and was shown up by him. Then he and Shades go beat Luke to near-death, then years later Shades calls Diamondback to let him know that they didn't actually kill him. Really, anything's better than some vague jealous daddy-love motivation.

Some minor news re: The Defenders. Confirmed as returning thus far (other than the main heroes of course) Claire; Misty Knight; Trish; Stick; Karen
I also think it's a safe bet we will get Foggy and Hogarth too. Possible returning characters; Madame Gao? (Though I heard she would be a villain in Iron Fist so maybe not). Kingpin/Fisk? That guy from JJ who took the meds? Electra? (Likely if the Hand is going to be involved.) Iirc it's only six episodes, so I will be curious how they proceed. Friggin psyched for Sigourney Weaver though!
