I imagine they only did her face and neck in prosthetics and the body was shot separately. I wonder if carice was wearing a green suit and they cgi'd her face onto the body. It looked pretty legit and you could definitely tell it was carice's aged up face. Bet she had fun with selfies.
Belief is so often the death of reason. RIP And now his watch has ended
Liam summed it up very eloquently here, exactly the emotion I was trying to figure out from that moment...
"The shock value of seeing her, the real Melisandre, a little old lady getting into bed and pulling the covers up over her, it was so human, so sad, so odd," Cunningham said. "You can't take your eyes off of it."
“The idea is there’s an indefinite indeterminate quality that she could be ancient,” Podeswa says. “We were limited by choosing to use a real person rather than a complete CG creation. Because what does a 400-year-old person look like? We don’t know. So if you try to create that, then you’re creating something that looks beyond our known reality. Here you feel like she’s very old without putting a number on it.”
Well by using a real life 80 year old woman for the body, they just shocked the shit out of about 90% of the show's youthful viewers who have no idea what Grandma looks like under those floral cardigans and culottes she wears ...
Gotta hand it to the body double, she's one brave old lady but then she didn't have to get nakey for hundreds of extras the way Lena's body double did!
