Maybe it's Bloodraven? This was their original vision:

That's because he was gender-swapped into Karsi. It was just that part but male. They should've kept her as Karsi Sixskins. Hardhome would've been even more epic with her fighting the WW with bears and wolves I had not noticed Birgitte Hjort Sørensen before, wow, she is quite a revelation. She was on HBO this year in Vinyl. She would have been great as Tormund's counterpoint.

Unless LSH's face is completely rotten with her skull showing or something like that, I can't see LSH being a "VFX challenge". My money is on an ice spider, a reanimated bear or some other creepy animal zombie north of the Wall. I'm still on board the LSH hype train, Sati don't worry Ice spiders and ice dragons would be all CGI for sure, I don't see what the prosthetics guy would have to do with them, or why it would be that big of a deal, considering that they've already been doing CGI dragons for years now. Also, at what point in S4 were they planning to introduce ice dragons and ice spiders? That doesn't make sense to me at all. To me, it sounds like he's talking about some elaborate makeup effect (he's the main prosthetics guy after all, that's his speciality) which they were originally planning to bring in S4, but chickened out, which could very well point to Lady Stoneheart, she is described as pretty gruesome looking in the books. No matter how gruesome her face looks, it can't possibly compare to the WW prosthetics. It would be regular zombie make up like we see in TWD, not a whole complex structure covering her entire face like the WW masks. That's not the kind of stuff that would be considered a challenge for them and it wouldn't need VFX, only practical effects. Maybe what he meant by challenge was making her look convincingly horrifying and gut-wrenching, but not cartoony. Making her resemble a rotting TWD zombie would totally be missing the point, imo, no one finds that stuff scary anymore, and she has to look scary. A lesser prosthetics team would probably go that route, but I think there is the potential for some amazing visual horror here, that goes far beyond your typical zombie stuff - and pulling that off would probably be considered a challenge. Dude, I don't know, but he is the prosphetics guy, so I do think he was talking about something from his department. I really don't see it being ice spiders or ice dragons. YES. It's so much more difficult to pull off something simple. I mean if it's ice dragons, then what is the challenge, they just do CGI. Here they have to make the person recognizable but still do something to her to make her look different. What do they do about her eyes? About her hair? About her skin? What about gash in her throat - something like this can very easily look stupid like Two Face in TDK (what the fuck were they thinking?). And what to do instead of the scars on her cheeks? There are so many options and it's so easy to overdo something like this. Another thing is that they have to keep it simple enough to be able to recreate it for her each scene. Maybe it's Bloodraven? This was their original vision: But BR already showed up and we saw him as a tree. Doing it different this time wouldn't make any sense, this is something new they didn't do in any shape or form before

Talisa Stoneheart is happening guys. Yeah, the real prosthetic challenge must be the zombie baby coming out of her belly.

I'm almost sure they are talking about ice spiders. Note that it's something they tried to include in past seasons. My personal theory is that in Episode 04x04 the White Walker carrying the baby to the Lands of Always Winter was originally riding an ice spider. And I suppose that some ice spiders were planned to appear in Hardhome too.

I hope to god it's Catelyn.
I think LSH appearance would be a combo of prosthetics and CGI, like the White Walkers. Like @sati said, it could be very easy to get carried away with something like this.
I think her look should be a little muted from that of the books (I've felt GRRM went overboard with her rotting flesh and white hair, she's only been dead for three days). I'm thinking grey streaks in the hair. Paler skin. Heavy dark circles around the eyes. Black, cracked lips. Some bloody scratches across her face. And a half-healed cut across her throat. A grey dress with a black hooded cloak.
Nothing crazy.

Missed this discussion - catching up! As others have pointed out, it seems more likely a 'prosthetics supervisor' would be talking about special effects where prosthetics are used, not visual effects done mostly by CGI, right? That's why I don't think it has anything to do with ice spiders or dragons or any of the effects that they would do primarily using computerized effects. Prosthetics are for people dressing up as creatures or otherwise. That being said, I think prosthetics are used for the giants and the white walkers and wights so to me it sounds more likely it's one of the northern/wall type scenes. It very well could be LSH if they are in fact putting her in finally so I'm open minded about that as well but betting it's more to do with something big they've been planning for awhile at the wall, but NOT ice spiders.

Please be LSH. When I first saw that quote, I wrote it off as ice spiders, but then that would be all CGI. It could either be 1) Some extension of Bloodraven or 2) Stoneheart, the latter makes the most sense.

***WARNING SPOILERS FROM LEAK***I'm pretty sure this just refers to Melisandre without her glamour now. It looks to be mostly prosthetics and not a whole lot of CGI which would be a pretty big challenge to pull off convincingly. No doubt much more of a challenge than Stoneheart which would just require some kind of toned down zombie prosthetics are most.

Generic old hag stuff isn't much of a challenge imho well, zombies certainly aren't. The majority of prostheses made for film and TV are probably for zombies, and Stoneheart would be much more toned down because she's not a zombie, but she would be along a similar vein.

It does make sense with the other bits about how this is something they wanted to do in previous seasons and didn't/skipped it too.

But why would they show that as early as in s4? Melisandre did fuck all in season 4

It looks like it could be showing the entire process. If they are using mainly prosthetics and minimal CGI, then Mel growing older in front of our eyes would be a fairly complicated process.

I think Benioff pretty much confirmed this was about Melisandre. He said in the 6x01 Inside the Episode they've been wanting to reveal Mel's true form for years, but were just waiting for the right moment.

I can't imagine a "right" moment before tonight. Revealing this while Stannis was alive would've been a mistake, IMO.
