Have you guys seen The Name of the Rose? The movie is so-so but it drips atmosphere. Nothing more mysterious than a good ole medieval library When I looked it up the other day after seeing this post, I saw it had Sean Connery in it. I found it online today and I'm a bit more than halfway through now. Great atmosphere, you're right. And holy shit was that sex scene both unexpected and spectacular! Valentina Vargas (had to check her name on IMDB) is lovely.

More on-topic, I remembered just now observing how Dorne-like the gardens in the Castell de Santa Florentina were when its usage in s6 was first reported on by WOTW.
So I'm sure at least a portion of the shoot there will be for that purpose.
EDIT: And of course the castle's so damn big other parts of it could stand in for entirely different places. I just saw a post on WOTW that this part of it could be Horn Hill.

That sex scene is amazing. Incredibly natural. Glad you watched it, it's the most medieval of all medieval movies I've seen (give or take the 7th Seal ) The book is something else, though. Pretty mind-bending.

Pretty mind-bending. I just finished it now (I was interrupted watching it about a dozen times). Overall it was pretty damn good.
And yeah, I can see how that kind of monkly intrigue and old creepy library atmosphere would be a good influence for the show's Oldtown stuff. In some ways it seems it's already influenced GoT though. For instance I'm certain the shot of Selyse's brother being burnt in ep. 402 is directly lifted from the movie too (from the scene when Ron Perlman's hunchback is at the stake).

Hadn't made that connection, will look for it when I rewatch the movie! And yes, it's the kind of atmosphere they could go for if we're lucky. The absolute lack of maester casting calls has me worried, though. We could use a young maester to introduce Sam to that world and of course Marwyn to give the whole thing a sinister edge. Initially I thought the young maester from the casting leaks was for Oldtown but I think you may be right and it's probably Northern related (especially since he only appears in 1 episode).

I think we'll get some Maester casting calls eventually. If they're going through all of this trouble to give us an Oldtown I'm sure there'll need to be a few of them. I'm just surprised there wasn't an important Maester part on the first round of casting calls for the most important characters of the season, either a Marwyn figure or even just someone important at the Citadel we meet in TWOW or something.

Too bad Qyburn is in King's Landing.... he has the right vibe for a Marwyn (although I suppose Qyburn is more of a scientist, not a mystic). Maybe they just allow Euron into the Oldtown libraries.... merging Euron with The Reader, hehe.

Hopefully we find out a bit more about all of that soon from another round or two of casting calls.

All of this Oldtown talk and these Girona pictures have made me want to re-read the AFFC prologue. So time to search "A Feast For Crows PDF" on google...I mean...open up my copy of the book because I buy things like a good citizen...
Sorry, GrrM. I'll buy them one day but right now the only books I can afford are for school. And I can afford booze just fine...but you get my point, GrrM.

So I went crazy and started googling old libraries in Spain (inspired by the Oldtown conversation). Sounds like they got plenty to choose from: Biblioteca América, Santiago de Compostela Biblioteca de Salamanca El Ateneo, Madrid Biblioteca del monasterio de Yuso, La Rioja (actual medieval monastery) Real Biblioteca del monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial Get to it, D&D!

Wow! Those are some impressive libraries! Some of those look straight out of Hogwarts castle haha! I especially like the Salamanca one - it has a "Citadel" kind of feel which to me always felt somewhat religious mixed with academic in the descriptions and mysticism elements.

Salamanca is my favorite too (academic and religious mix as you said), along with the monastery. Curiously, I didn't find any old libraries in Girona. But they can easily shoot library interiors somewhere else.

Some curious trivia, they already used Salamanca last season. You can see the cathedral in the Volantis shot: The real one:

Agreed and it's interesting that city skyline was used for Volantis - nice find cami - I never notice those sorts of details but always enjoy the easter eggs and trivia bits later on. I really like the way they did Volantis last season so I know everything they do this next season there in Girona is going to be fabulous.

The first 3 audiobooks are fantastic, but Dotrice makes a bunch of continuity mistakes with his voices and pronunciations that gets people fired up. Still worth it IMO. Especially if you have a 30+ minute commute to work or school!

These two tweets are the perfect encapsulation of what WiC.net is now compared to what it used to be:
