Hi guys! I decided to create an own thread for my announcement. As of tomorrow I will be doing my army service and this will last for 6 or 9 months (I wouldn't do it otherwise, if it wasn't mandatory in Finland) I will have time to visit the forum during my free weekends. So I'm going to be very inactive for a long long time, but I should be way before next season airs(unless they decide to make me an officer..) Perhaps this will help me cure my unhealthy GoT and Sophie addictions. I have really enjoyed my time here and I have been posting here quite frequently and it's sad to be forced to have such a long break, but the law is the law. I have never been in a better internet community and I hope you will keep up the good work while I'm gone! Don't worry, I'll be back. Yours sincerely, Diablotion

Well, I'll keep the Sophie thread going strong for you, knowing now that it will be your respite on your free weekends from your long days in the army.

Take a picture of CLEGANEBOWL with you. Serving in the army is pure boredom for most of the time according to every person I know that served, so keep the picture with you to fill those boring moments with pure hype. By the time you return, season 6 will be our doorstep and you'll be ready for the most anticipated event in the history of humanity.

Good Luck and you will do great - try and enjoy it if you can!
I served 4 years in the US military. It's voluntary here of course, but to be honest - myself and many vets feel the US should have a 1 year mandatory service requirement the same as other countries. I think it would really help a lot of young people get their head on straight before deciding on a career or college path. I know that at 17 just turning 18, I was a very immature young person and had no idea how to be an adult yet or where I wanted to go with life and had no money for college and would have had to get loans/grants etc since my grades in high school were terrible.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, try not to look at it as a 'mandatory sentence by law' kind of thing, but as a helpful opportunity to figure things out as an adult while still having an anchor (your govt) to fall back on and provide guidance. So many young kids with no real skills out there flipping burgers at minimum wage jobs here could have really benefited from a program like yours. It's a gift to you really.
Hope to hear from you and how it's going while you're on your free weekends. I'm interested to hear how Finland does things!
Keep your chin up! The time will go faster than you realize and you'll look back on it when your my age as a great time in your life (hopefully). I had so many amazing experiences in my 4 years of service and saw the world/traveled, learned to shoot a gun, rode a gun ship through the panama canal, saw the start of Operation Desert Storm (yes that ages me!) haha... so much fun!
/salute

Hopefully Putin doesn't try some shit up around thereabouts. I know quite a few Finns are worried about that. Otherwise all should be well for you @diablotion.

I don't think he's that foolish to overstep the boundaries but I haven't kept up on that situation very well to be honest. Does Finland's 1 year service agreement require it's cadets or new recruits to deploy? I would think it's more like homefront defense (like our National Guard duty) more than deployable forces, right?

I would think it's more like homefront defense (like our National Guard duty) more than deployable forces, right? I'm really not sure. As for Putin he has Russian troops in the Ukraine unofficially (officially they're "on vacation" there , I swear to God that was the excuse they gave for that), so he certainly isn't keeping to any agreements about that. I think they're more threatening that the Baltic states will be next rather than Finland at the moment, though IIRC the Finnish navy has had to chase around a few more Russian submarines in their waters than usual. It's hard to say what he'll do and how much is posturing and so on, but if I was a Finn and shared borders with him though (and had a history of being invaded by Russia previously) I would be very nervous.

Sorry to bring down the mood with geopolitics btw. May Sophie watch over you, @diablotion. Maybe, if you have twitter, you could see if she'll wish you well?

Yeah... "vacation in Ukraine" is believable. Such a nice place to visit! Well I'm sure Diablotion will fill us in on what's required of that 1 year of service and I'm not going to crap up his announcement thread with International politics about Roose Bolton Putin's taking over up there!

Yeah, majority of Finns are quite worried about our Eastern neighbor's newest antics.
