"The woman mauled to death at a lion park in South Africa on Monday has been identified as an American tourist who has done award-winning visual effects work on Game of Thrones. Katherine Chappell, 29, was killed by a lioness that bit her neck while she was taking pictures through an open window at the Lion Park in Johannesburg, police say. The young woman likely didn't see the animal coming; witnesses say they honked their horns to warn her as it snuck up on the side of her car. The park has said it forbids open windows and has posted signs warning tourists to keep them closed. In a Facebook statement, Chappell's family stated she was visiting South Africa as part of a volunteer mission to protect wildlife. The visual effects editor was employed at the Vancouver office of Scanline, a company that says it specializes in producing "complex effects for high end feature film and commercials." On IMDB, a website that tracks information about film productions, Chappell is credited for her work on Game of Thrones, Godzilla and Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Read more here.

The Lannisters have gone too far this time. A bit soon for that, don't you think?

The Lannisters have gone too far this time. A bit soon for that, don't you think? Yes, it was tasteless, but I find the endless parade of "thoughts and prayers" comments that people post on the internet when somebody they never met dies to be pretty meaningless. I might just be a cynical bastard and I should also point out that Today is my drinking day. I will say that being mauled to death by a lion is an awful way to go. One of my fears is being killed by a predatory animal, big cats especially are insanely fierce and strong. I hope it was quick.

CBS This Morning was talking about it. They interviewed Jack Hanna who said that with the strength of these cats it is over in an instant. Of course he wouldn't go on TV and talk about how awful it must have been. She wanted to make a movie about poaching.
