...with Sam, Gilly, Baby Sam and maybe hopefully, Shireen. Alas, Maester Aemon won't be making the trip with us. *sniff*
Who do we expect to meet there? Sarella Sand? Who else? I imagine whatever Sam does there, these will be invented, show-only scenes. Since it seems we'll be going along with Sam & co. on this trip, what might we expect to see, learn, hear while there?

Wait wait wait, how can you be sure? I'm giving it a very, very strong probability based on the talk between Sam and Gilly. He mentions the Citadel, she asks what's that. He says its where maesters train. She asks where it is. He says its in Oldtown. Then we have Stannis talking with Sam, telling him to keep reading and discussing dragonglass. Plus, we know Maester Aemon is going to die soon, and the Watch will need a new maester. Seems pretty much a foregone conclusion, IMHO. Now, will we be making the trip with them? I believe so--seems a relatively inexpensive set piece to create, the interior of any old marble-and-columned museum or college, with suitable torches and piles of scrolls added in for authenticity.

Yeah, to me, this week's episode all but confirmed that they'll be going there.

But, we'll wait for konradsmith or alcasino to check in here. Those guys somehow magically know when everything's going to happen.
IIRC, we weren't at the Citadel with Sam in the books, or were we? It's been so long since I read them...

Aemon seems likely to die in 507 (the Wall will skip 506), so it'd make sense for Jon and Sam to part ways going north and south respectively to Hardhome and Oldtown from Eastwatch early on in ep. 508.
(Sorry for posting this theory again and again, btw folks, but there wasn't yet an official "Sam goes to Oldtown" thread at the time, so I had to parrot it again and again on a half-dozen different ones).

Only briefly in Sam's last AFFC chapter.

Only briefly in Sam's last AFFC chapter. And what did we see/hear/learn while we were there? Anything that would translate well to screen? He met Alleras (Sarella, one of the Sand Snakes dressed as a boy) and Pate (who in the books is Jaqen in disguise at this point). And Maester Marywn who hearing his info about the WW and Dany (IIRC) sailed off forthwith for Meereen to aid her. Marwyn also told him that he thought the Maesters were responsible for killing off the dragons and ensuring that there would be as little magic as possible in the Seven Kingdoms.
Though I imagine D and D are more interested in the things coming later for Sam in Oldtown (things he'll learn about fighting the WW and so on), I think we'll at least get Marwyn next year. Also it would be pretty easy to have showJaqen slip aboard Sam's ship if he docks in Braavos briefly as in AFFC (either in late s5 or more likely early s6, I'd say) because I imagine whatever the Faceless Men are up to in the Citadel must be a big deal.

^ Ah, yes, now I'm remembering. Thanks!! I looked up Sarella Sand in the Wiki earlier and it says she was obliquely referenced in 'First Of His Name.' I assume that referred to Oberyn (talking with Cersei) saying he had eight daughters. Can't remember any other reference specifically to Sarella.

The show writers haven't been very subtle with their foreshadowing and hints this season so the additional talk of Oldtown does lend credibility to Sam and Gilly heading to the Citadel speculation. My biggest beef with this is the lengthy amount of time it takes to get one's maester chain. From my understanding, it's a long ordeal like getting one's PhD ... years of study and testing from novice, acolyte and extensive testing for each 'link' in the chain representing the various schools of study. I always thought it was odd Jon sent him away in the books too because of how quickly things were advancing at the wall and the walkers on the way and so few men there anyways. I wasn't surprised when it looked liked it was being dropped from the show entirely as the show timeline is moving even more quickly than the books. Of course, on the show, time and distance mean nothing - everyone's got a magic portal and watch.

I guess he's going to waltz in there and ace all his link exams like Doogie Howser!

Ahhhh. So this is where you've all been hiding. Missing you all loads at the other site which is rapidly becoming nothing but a ranting dump. Anyway, glad to be here.
I was surprised at all the mentions of Oldtown because I'd assumed we'd never see it. However, after thinking about, I'm still not sure we'll see the place. Sam may sail for there (still not sure about that) but that could mean that he just goes off screen like Bran. I find it hard to believe they'll include another site which would mean new sets and actors. Of course, that depends on whether whatever happens in Oldtown is critical or can be handled by actors we already know. Also, I was thinking that Sam and Gilly would flee with Shireen rather than Mance's baby but she went south with daddy. So confused about how that's going to play out. Finally, if Sam leaves the Wall and Jon's in an ice coma, who will be at the Wall?
ETA: Damn. I'm a Fleabottom peasant. Bummer.

I guess the reason that they're holding Sam off from going to Oldtown is because they don't want him to spend his entire season on a boat. Can't say I disagree too strongly with that, the meandering journey to Oldtown in the books was... a challenge, let's just put it that way.
Although I'm wondering what Sam will even do there, since I expect pretty much everyone in that story. Can they really have Jaqen there? He will just confuse the audience. Maybe Sarella Sand and one of the maesters. And of course Gilly and maybe Shireen if he takes her with him. I'm 99% sure Jon still sends him, because I don't think Sam would ever desert the Night's Watch.

Are we definitely going? Or is this just a throwaway line to a disused story, like the way they had Robb head to the Crag to accept a surrender back in series 2? Yes I remembered that. Because the North remembers.

Because the North remembers. Most likely, yes. If for no other reason than for Sam to take advantage of the biggest library in the world to find out more information on the White Walkers.
