Definitely one of the most beautiful episodes of the entire series. I have so many thoughts and feelings right now. Last week, I said that I'd be okay with it if they dealt with the White Walker threat for good in this episode, and the last three episodes of the show dealt with the aftermath of the battle and Cersei. I didn't really expect that it would actually happen ... but here we are. Loved that they brought back Melisandre, and the fact that she died immediately after the Long Night had ended felt both thematically as well as narratively appropriate for the character. I was expecting a lot more casualties among the main characters, considering this was (allegedly?) the big battle of the series which has been hyped from pretty much the first episode, but I'm also glad they didn't kill off like half of the main cast. Sad we lost Dolorous Edd, and the way little Lyanna Mormont was killed made me feel sick to my stomach. Dany fighting alongside Jorah and him dying in her arms was a really beautiful sendoff for the character. I can't imagine a more fitting death for this man who had dedidacted his entire existence to serving his queen, protecting her until his last breath. From all the characters who have died this episode, Jorah I'm gonna miss the most. His was such a calming presence on the show, and Iain Glen one of my favourite actors. His relationship to Dany is one of my favourites on the show. I was also not expecting Theon's death to him me as hard as it did. Theon is probably the character I've changed my feelings on the most over the years. What an arc he goes through, holy shit. Giving his life to protect Bran and Winterfell felt appropriate and redeeming. My only gripe, maybe, is that perhaps I'm slightly underwhelmed by the resolution of the White Walkers / Long Night storyline? I don't know, I'm very conflicted on that, because I do prefer Game of Thrones being about political intrigue rather than ice zombies. Over the years, there have been so many theories, so many prophecies ... but nah, Arya just stabs the main guy and they win. The End. I don't hate that ending, and the way that entire montage was put together with the haunting soundtrack was absolutely beautiful ... I guess I just didn't see it coming. Azor Awho? Guess Cersei is the final boss of the series. Definitely 10/10 for me.

I agree with everything you wrote, Basil.
The shot of Drogon laying down on top of Jorah almost made me cry. They do such a great fucking job with the dragons. They make them feel like pets we can relate to.
It reminded me of my struggles during the 2008 recession. I was laid off from my cushy IT job twice in the same year. The second time it happened I just hung up the phone, slid down to the floor and started crying. My cat instantly ran over and began to comfort me. The way Drogon immediately reacted to Danny's grief rang so true to me that I got emotional. It was so beautiful, and so sad.

Aww, Davey ... I really loved that last shot with Drogon too. It reminded me of a scene in Final Fantasy X (kind of obscure reference maybe), in which Tidus finds out a devastating truth about Yuna's pilgrimage and completely breaks down as a result, but is comforted by Valefor who puts her wings around him. It was a really sweet moment, it made Drogon feel like a real character.

Game of Thrones had people fucking with their TVs for the first time. Protip: HD TV settings out of the box are almost always garbage. Factory settings are designed for Best Buy show rooms where there are bright fluorescent lights, so the TV settings have contrast and colors boosted to make them pop in the store.
Which means at home watching an episode like this you won't be able to see anything. As soon as you buy a new TV you should hire someone to calibrate it or at least find some type of home calibration instructions on the internet.
People were so pissed about how the 2014 Godzilla bluray looked because their TVs weren't calibrated that the studio cranked up the brightness on the digital version, which bastardized the cinematography. One of the things I loved about that film was how apocalyptic it felt, I mean the monster literally had an EMP attack that wiped out all electricity so of course it was meant to be dark. And I calibrated my television so it looked damn good, appropriately dark but I could make out what was happening.

I'm still shaking.
Farkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
I actually thought for a second that humanity would die, but then it would be a boring 3 episodes left.
I'm just thinking about Arya's arc, ever since season 1 she's been told to say "Not today" to the God of Death. I didn't see it coming until Melisandre said her line about "blue eyes" and "What do we say to the God of Death?". I can't help but feeling there is much more to it than that. Was it her assassin training, somehow she got the jump on the Night King and all his generals?
Bran's role seemed kind of redundant, he was essentially just bait. Did he know Arya was going to do that, i was under the impression it wasn't their plan. Their battle strategy was not very good, they knew taking out the generals would mean the wights die, that should have been priority. So many people died (except the main characters apparently).
So many good moments in the episode - loved the visual of the 'dance of dragons' up in the clouds - Sansa and tyrion scenes - Sandor's PTSD - Jorah going out like a boss and Dany fighting with him - Jon's desperation - All of Melisandre's scenes - Grey worm's decisions in battle - The Night King's smirk - Theon dying for Bran
This episode would have been improved by some last minute information about the Night King. Who was he? What is his motivation? (the lack of closure on his kind and their magic believes me to think that they really just had a simple motivaton, endless night)
The last shot of dawn rising was beautiful.
Just an exhilarating, gut-wrenching episode and my heart rate was up the entire time.

I still don't understand why Bran was so important to the Night King.
I don't think the Night king/ wights were pointless. It's like saying the dragons are pointless. Hello this is a fantasy series, otherwise it would just be a political drama. The reason the White walker storyline was important for me, was that it highlighted the best and worst of humanity. We have Jon, Dany, arya etc who decided to fight for the living, and you have Cersei and Euron who decided to do nothing. I almost wish they had failed at winterfell, once again the South didn't see the Dead. The white walkers gave characters a reason to put aside their differences and band together, and it says something about humanity/characters like cersei who couldn't even do that for the survival of their species.

Quoting Basil right here because I think this sums up how I felt about the end (I don't mind that it was Arya that killed the NK): "My only gripe, maybe, is that perhaps I'm slightly underwhelmed by the resolution of the White Walkers / Long Night storyline? I don't know, I'm very conflicted on that, because I do prefer Game of Thrones being about political intrigue rather than ice zombies. Over the years, there have been so many theories, so many prophecies ... but nah, Arya just stabs the main guy and they win. The End. I don't hate that ending, and the way that entire montage was put together with the haunting soundtrack was absolutely beautiful ... I guess I just didn't see it coming. Azor Awho?" I thought the soundtrack for this episode was absolutely stunning. Probably the best they've done. Best scene as mentioned above: the dragon covering Dany/Jorah, as she mourns Jorah. I also agree he had a very powerful death scene. Him dying to protect his Queen and them fighting side by side until his last breath. Iain Glen has been a wonderful. steadying presence in this show. I think Emilia Clarke does her best work with him. Even with three episodes left, he will be majorly missed by me. Second best scene: Theon fighting off the incoming army of the NK. Bran telling him he was always good man. Theon's death protecting Bran. I felt like Theon had fully come full circle. Alfie Allen has always nailed this role and I feel like he was very underrated. I also have to agree while Lyanna went out like a badass , killing the giant but the giant squeezing her to death, made me ill because she is kid. Edd dying was also sad. But I felt like out of those notable characters that died, they had served their purpose on the show and their characters had come full circle. When people said this episode was more brutal than the Red Wedding, I didn't think so, because at the RW you had characters that were cut off at the knees with more potential story to go, where as here, you felt like the characters had done all they could do so far on the show. And that is really okay....not everything has to be better than the RW. Melisandre had a good end as well. Beric too. My only real complaint was being unable to see and I lost track of a few characters. Unless I missed something, I am guessing next episode will reveal that Gendry, Pod, Greyworm and Ghost are dead? It doesn't seem like Gendry, Pod, and Ghost returned back from the first charge. I also would have liked more info on the Night King. Why do a battle now? Where did that magic come from? I wish the Starks that rose out of their crypts actually defended the people in the crypts. DaveyJoe, thanks for that TV info!

I tried to take a bit of time to compose myself so I don’t end up typing some stream of consciousness as per usual. I failed. Starting off with the big surprise: Arya. For the last 2-3 seasons I’ve harped on Arya kinda being nothing but a killing machine who is only here to be badass. She does that yet again in this episode… but I loved it. Isn’t it weird that I have a problem with her killing people she has genuine emotional motive to like Walder or Littlefinger, but I’m totally fine with this? After Mel showed up and announced she’d be dead by dawn, I just knew that Arya would be the one to do it. That’s exactly what they were building up to, and after Arya’s conversation with Gendry last episode, killing Melisandre would've been inevitable. Then of course they’re alone in a room, and there I sit ready to be both vindicated and disappointed. But no! I have never had such a massive grin on my face when I’m proven wrong as I did when watching that scene unfold. Also after taking down the Night King, she’s definitely not killing Cersei so it’s twice as good So they killed off a character presumed to be the main antagonist, who got a million fan theories despite not being particularly deep or appealing, only for the true main antagonist to be someone more developed whose imminent defeat could actually be engaging and emotional? Night King got Snoke’d. Deaths were obviously lighter than expected. That said I’m also glad to be wrong here. Give everyone a big ‘last stand’ death and eventually they just become stale, so I’m glad the writers decided not to go that route. The deaths they had were definitely more emotional this way. The Mormonts. Theon. And especially Melisandre. I could never have envisioned a more perfect death for her. What a beautiful end for such a great and complex character. The music. THE MUSIC. Hearing the Lord of Light theme in a different key is amazing, and what a gorgeous score for that final montage with the Night King moving towards Bran. A true rival to Light of the Seven. We are not worthy of Djawadi. I gave it a 9, mainly because I want to save my 10s for the Cersei drama which I generally find more engaging, but I could very well make this the exception after a rewatch later tonight. Or from just listening to this all day on repeat.

Ok it was quite literally raining zombies at one point. so clever and dark and just amazing. i absolutely loved how they managed to combine full on mayhem with moments of stealth. arya's scene in the library sneaking around was brilliant. i loved the touch of her drops of blood alerting the wights of her location. just amazing. the hound's panic attack was all too real. the mist. i thought it was a clever way to basically sideline jon and daenerys, at least at the beginning. did i see my girl daenerys swinging a sword there towards the end? they might make a warrior woman of her, yet. bran's last words to theon "you're a good man". so simple, but that's honestly the only thing theon has probably ever wanted to hear. jorah's death was so sad. that was probably the most emotional we've ever seen dany. emilia killed it the way she was just sobbing and begging him not to go. and the dragon coming in behind her i love how, in the end, jon and dany were basically useless. talk about a red herring. MELISANDRE. i'm biased cause i loved her to start with, but she kind of stole the show. from granting the dothraki flaming swords to lighting the trench...when she told arya "what do we say to the god of death?" i think i screamed a little. her end was sad but triumphant. god i just loved it. and lastly, arya is officially the GOAT of this series. nothing left to say, like, period. she shut those blue eyes alright, the night king's. her whole storyline has been about death, so it makes sense she's the one to look it in the face and stab it in the gut. wowwwwww wowww wowwwww

Very disappointed in terms of story. Action was good. Arya the killing machine killing the NK was stupid. Fuck this. No major character death, lol.
5. I'm too sad and disappointed to write my actual thoughts atm.

It's interesting that this is such a divisive episode. I definitely don't think it was perfect in terms of story, there were some things I was underwhelmed by (especially the resolution to the Others storyline), and I'm sure if I tried to be objective and really thought about it, I'd find other things wrong with the episode. But just on a very subjective, emotional level, Game of Thrones hasn't managed to move me this much in years, and that's why I can't help but to love what they have done here. And I also find it absolutely freaking hilarious how this episode literally burried a thousand fan theories and even some propechies that were made in-lore. Like, what's the deal with Azor Ahai reborn, Lightbringer, Nissa Nissa, the Long Night, the Great War? All of that seems like a red herring now, because at the end, all it took was for someone, anyone, to stab the main guy, and the Army of the Dead is toast. I honestly love this.

A true rival to Light of the Seven. We are not worthy of Djawadi. Can't put into words how much I loved the new theme that played during the final moments of the episode. Also, that haunting last shot of the episode ... Melisandre collapsing to a melancholic version of the Lord of Light theme as the dawn breaks. That moment will stay with me for a long time.

I do think they slightly overhyped this though. It was a beautifully done battle sequence and the scope of it was huge, but the lighting really effected it poorly, IMO. All the other battle episodes looked better.
I also think seeing Avengers: Endgame pull off a massive battle sequence with a shitload of things going on at the same time didn't help either.
Arya killing the NK. I'm fine with it, it works, it's by no means out of nowhere but I still can't help but think Jon or Bran may have made more sense. Like if Arya dropped the dagger and Bran caught it and stuck him. I think I'm just confused on what Jon is needed for, if not for this. I hope they answer some questions about why the NK wanted Bran and.

I'm kinda happy they focused on this in the trailers so much, since now, going into the last 3 episodes, we've seen no footage and have absolutely no idea what to expect. Also Cersei being the real antagonist was totally foreshadowed in the season trailer.
