Title a reference to Jonathan Pryce's line about the envelope Episode one was very good. Tom Hardy nailed the mysterious and somewhat unhinged James. Such an intense performance. And a really good supporting cast too. I mean, Jonathan Pryce was always going to be great, but I was pleased by the others too. Music was good. Really liked the opening credits. Very mysterious, look forward to this unravelling over the remaining episodes.

This is airing on FX right? They had an F bomb uncensored? Is the show violent?

This is airing on FX right? They had an F bomb uncensored? Is the show violent? Violent? So far not really. I expect there will be violence in later episodes. Three times someone says fuck/fucking, that I can recall off the top of my head. This was BBC, not sure if it was uncensored when shown on TV but it certainly wasn't on iplayer. Can't imagine why it would have been censored though, it was on after watershed and BBC has other shows like that. Is FX harsh on censoring or something?

That's not necessarily true. HBO is an American channel after all. There are different types of channels, and some can show whatever they want. FX airs It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia which is full of profanity you couldn't say on other networks. I download the episodes through my PS3, though, so I'm not sure if they are censored at all during the initial broadcasts.

So like what's this show about? There's like pirates but also supernatural stuff? No pirates. Basically a father dies and a son, long thought dead, returns for the funeral. He has been missing in Africa and has a sinister reputation. Father left him a strategically significant piece of land in America which the East India Trading (the leader is Jonathan Pryce) company wants from him because of how boundaries will get drawn when an agreement between US and UK is reached, and because of access to China. Also there is a half sister (Oona Chaplin) he was in love with and probably had a child with before he disappeared 10 years ago. Supernatural elements are hinted at. Not sure whether this is going to be played out as mere superstition or actual 'magic'

HBO is premium and FX is cable though, they aren't required to follow the same censorship guidelines. There's certain profanity you can use after a certain time and FX gets away with more since it's not basic, but they still can't say fuck or show boobs or anything. It's the same reason Vikings is censored on History but everywhere else it's available shows the nudity.

I'm just not sure how much FX can get away with because I don't watch it. It's funny to me and I wonder how the FCC decides what different channels can get away with since you watch them all on the same cable box. And I wonder how long before the FCC tries to make Netflix put TV-MA ratings on their streaming shows.

My point is that if we're going to talk about American culture, I'd like to remind everybody that an American channel brought us Game of Thrones and Westworld.

Anyway, here is another quote from the show. This one got the Guardian's vote for 'Most fantastically baroque threat of the week' “Please do not misunderstand the situation. You send me 12 men, I will send you 12 sets of testicles in a bag and we can watch your little whores devour them together.”

I enjoyed episode 2. People have been saying it moves too slowly but I don't feel that at all. It's spinning out the answers and mysteries over the course of the series and I felt we got plenty of progression this week.
SEason 2 confirmed, by the way

Only saw first episode and was so focused on perving about Hardy that the plot eluded me. Need to rewatch it and see episode 2 but that's next week...I saw 5 movies with Ed Harris this week and it's only Friday so there's gonna be at least 3 more and it just would kill me
