I LOVED it. It was sooo good, omg. I'm too tired and emotional right now to post a coherent review, but apart from maybe one or two of the new songs that I felt like were dragging the story down a bit, the show was incredible. The best part for me was the actor who played Quasimodo, hands down. His name is David Jakobs and he is absolutely amazing in this role. He plays the character with so much energy and heart, it's impossible to not fall in love with him. He's super handsome too, even as Quasimodo. Also, Hellfire performed by a live orchestra on stage is something you got to see for yourself. There are no words to describe it, it's just pure, goosebumps inducing epicness. Holy shit.

So Hamilton packages are going on sale today for the 2019 season. As much as I want to see it, and I do, I just don't have the money to get a package for 4 people (as I have children who also love Broadway shows). Dang it.

I loved the show as a whole, but his performance was the most compelling aspect of it, it made my heart break for Quasimodo. That was perhaps the most beautiful and sincere portrayals of a character I have ever seen in a live musical, he made me feel so much for his character. It has been almost a week since I saw the show and I can't stop thinking about it, and especially about his performance.

Until I saw this, I had no idea that Moulin Rouge was coming to Broadway. Fun story, when I went on a cruise years ago, the only shows we could get on TV was Telemundo and Moulin Rouge. I meant to get on here because last week at the kids class trip, I was discussing Broadway shows with some of the kids and their parents. I loved it that boys and girls were like, I want to see that one and that one. Sweet!

She sings it so much better than Idina Menzel.

She does. Really well done. I would see this on Broadway despite the fact that my kids were like perfect target age for Frozen when it came out and we've watched the movie over 100x (no lie, I came to loathe the movie)

I've been listening to Once Upon a December all day because I'm so excited And can I just say how much I love the German lyrics to this song? They've always struck me as exceptionally lyrical and beautiful, even more so than the original English ones.

Oh my goodness Basil, have such a wonderful time. Not gonna lie, I don't understand a thing of German but when I hear it sung, it is gorgeous.

Sooo, Anastasia ... I loved it, but it had issues. The first act especially was very, very slow and some of the new songs didn't do anything for me. The animated movie had this really silly plot point about Rasputin being an evil sorcerer who sold his soul to put a curse on the royal family ... essentially replacing socialism with black magic. The musical on the other hand contains zero supernatural elements, Rasputin has been removed from the story completely, and it actually deals with the events and aftermath of the October Revolution in a rather historically accurate manner. I wouldn't call it a political story by any means, but the political side of things was at least acknowledged. This change I like on paper, but in place of Rasputin the musical introduces a new character called Gleb, who is a Russian general and serves as the face of the revolution and the main antagonist of the piece. And unfortunately, Gleb is an incredibly boring character. All of his songs were forgettable AF and it honestly blows my mind to think that that character was played by Ramin Karimloo on Broadway. What a waste of talent, seriously. It's such a boring, thankless role and probably my biggest gripe about the musical as a whole. The reason I didn't quite love the first act was the fact that Gleb is present in half of the scenes and he sucks out the energy of every single one of them. Of course the first act also had "Once Upon a December" and "Journey to the Past", which were powerfully sung and probably the musical highlights of the show for me. I can't describe with words how much "Once Upon a December" gets under your skin when performed live in front of you ... it's so beautifully haunting and melancholic, I get chills just thinking about it. I liked the second act much, much better than the first, not only because Gleb was barely in it, but also because it takes place entirely in Paris and introduces my favourite character in the show: Lily, who is essentially the equivalent of the character Sophie from the animted movie. Lily is fucking amazing ... I don't even know the name of the actress who played her that night, but she stole every single scene she was in. Her comedic timing and her voice were on point, and she's just an absolute powerhouse of a character. By far my favourite scene in the show was "Land of Yesterday", which was sung by Lily and the ensemble and included a long, complicated dance number that was a mix between Chicago and Fiddler on the Roof ... and I loved every single second of it. This show had some phenomenal costume design as well. From the beautiful, elaborate dresses of the Russian royals, to the early 20th century fashion in Paris (which I have a weakness for), everything was colourful and absolutely stunning. After the show, we went back to our hotel room and I watched the animated movie on Netflix. There are certain characters and scenes that I prefer in the movie over the stage show and vice versa. For example, the scene where Anastasia finally reunites with her grandmother is much shorter and simpler in the film, but this actually makes it more poignant I think ... it feels more sincere and powerful as a result. On stage, that scene is waaaaay too long and contains some really out-of-place comedic bits that kind of undermine the emotional payoff of what could have been the most powerful moment in the show. On the other hand, Dimitri and Vlad as characters I liked much more in the stage version ... and, as I said, Lily is so amazing, she by herself is reason enough to see this show. As for Anastasia herself, I like both versions of the character for different reasons. She is a bit more sassy and confident in the movie, whereas she often comes off as quite immature in the musical, but also more vulnerable and sincere. It's a really good show. Not something I need to go see a second time, but I'm glad I saw it. There are some issues, mainly in the first act ... but the good stuff is so fucking good, it easily and completely outweighs the bad. Oh, and for some reason, they replaced the original German translation that was used in the movie with a new one... and unfortunately, I don't think the new lyrics are anywhere near as good as the old ones, I thought they were actually quite bad.

So, there is a stage version of The Prince of Egypt currently in the works, which is set to premier on West End next year. Seriously, if it comes to Germany too, I will be there like day one. Here's a video of the cast performing When You Believe ... and it's so beautiful.
