Good news: today is Phantom day. Bad news: I didn't sleep well, hope traffic is not too bad and we get there in time, so I can take a nap before the show. That would be nice.

It's in 3 hours, we just arrived at the hotel! Yay! Time to jump on the bed!!! I don't have that kind of energy right now ... the drive was exhausting. I wanted to take a nap, but I don't think there'll be enough time for that, we need to get something to eat now and then get ready for the show. Man, stupid insomnia ... it ruins everything.

Phantom was amazing. Amazing. I'm still shaking. I've seen this show many, many times, but something about tonight was special. The cast was simply phenomenal, especially Christine. She was played by Annemarijn Maandag, and she was an angel. Her voice was perfect, her charisma magical. There was an incredible chemistry between her and her Phantom David Arnsperger. I almost jizzed my pants during Point of no Return, there was so much passion and eroticism, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Best Point of No Return I've ever seen. My heart was pumping so hard, it still is. What a brilliant show. I'm glad that I got the chance to see it one last time before it leaves Germany. Here's a picture I found of Annemarijn as Christine.

We listened to the recording of the Phantom of the Opera anniversary performance during the entire drive home. My boyfriend was surprisingly into it too, which made it all kinds of awesome.

A little bit about Annemarijn Maandag: she's super young and Christine is her first big role. She's also understudy and only gets to play Christine like two or three times a month, which makes her brilliant performance all the more impressive. From what I read on her facebook, she seems really happy and grateful to be allowed to play Christine. She recieved by far the biggest standing ovations and loudest cheers out of all the cast members during the final applause, the audience really loved her, and she seemed genuinely surprised and overwhelmed, I think she was about to cry. It was super cute and endearing. I hope she goes on doing great things. Her charisma on stage is absolutely magical, and her voice is flawless.

I wish her all the best and she does go on to great things. Maybe someone will cast her for the movie version of Wicked? Some musical theatre news: Leslie Odom, Jr (formerly of Hamilton) is in talks for Murder on the Orient Express that Kenneth Branagh is directing. Lin Manuel Mirenda, in addition to being in Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt, will be doing the music for Disney's live action Little Mermaid. He also has done some music for the upcoming Disney film Moana.

Sierra Boggess is going to play Christine in the first French production of Phantom of the Opera! https://www.instagram.com/p/BJSex7-B6UY Paris it is, then. Théâtre Mogador is literally across the street of the Opéra Garnier where the story of Phantom takes place. So fucking cool!

You guys know that there is a god awful official sequel to Phantom of the Opera called Love Never Dies, which is based on an even worse novel called The Phantom of Manhattan? Most of the time I pretend that it doesn't exist, because it's really ... bad, and if I were to accept it as canon, it would most definitely affect my enjoyment of the original in a negative way. Well, at least the score is quite beautiful, I actually really enjoy the music of Love Never Dies. Here's a duet between Christine and Erik where they sing about how they banged shortly after the events of Phantom of the Opera.

I never knew there was a sequel to Phantom! Mind blown! It hasn't made it to Broadway yet, I don't think it was nowhere near as successful as Webber had hoped it would be. Andrew Lloyd Webber is a little bit like the George Lucas of musical theatre, it's actually pretty tragic. The new tour production of Phantom for example is different than the original in many ways, because it was specifically designed as a prequel to Love Never Dies. For example: Raoul in the original is a little bit bland, but overall a nice guy who is gentle and loving to Christine. However in the new tour production, Raoul is kind of an asshole from the beginning, literally from his very first scene, because, of course, in Love Never Dies, the years have turned him into a violent and abusive drinker and gambler. It doesn't really bother me, because we still have the original production, which is a masterpiece, but yeah ... that whole thing is really just kind of sad.

Love Never Dies is basically fanfiction written by female phantom fans (also known as phans), who don't understand why Christine would choose Raoul, the handsome, young and rich aristocrat, over the Phantom, a horribly disfigured serial killer who lives in the sewers beneath the opera house and strangles people he doesn't like. And yes, the Phantom is a fascinating figure and Christine was kind of into it at first, but only until the Phantom showed his true colours to her. The idea that she would go back to him and bang him (beneath a moonless sky ) is really quite ridiculous and undermines the entire plot of Phantom of the Opera.
