I love the violin solo during the journey to the cemetery, it's so beautiful, it gives me chills every time I listen to it.

Not sure how I feel about the staging and choreography of this tour production. It is a little bit amateurish, it's like something you would see in a high school production. I really have no idea why they felt like changing the original and brilliant choreography by Gillian Lynne. Christine awkwardly dancing on the table is kind of cool, I guess ... and weird. It definitely takes away from the intimacy of the scene. Also the Phantom's wig is fucking terrible. Yeah ... I think I hate this.

One thing I really dislike about the German translation of Phantom (which overall is pretty good), is towards the end, Christine has one line, which to me is one of the most powerful lines in the entire show. That's the moment I usually start sobbing. It's when the Phantom forces her to choose between her freedom or Raoul's life, she sings: " The tears I might have shed for your dark fate, grow cold and turn to tears of hate!" She throws the word 'hate' at him, she is almost hysterical. It's a very, very powerful moment, in my opinion, especially in the hands of a good actress ( Gina Beck, for example). The German translation "Fast hätt' ich Tränen um dein Los verloren, doch nun wein' ich nur noch aus Zorn!" (I almost would have shed tears for you, but now I only cry out of anger!) simply doesn't have the same emotional weight. The German version expresses frustration, not so much the fact that Christine is heartbroken and defeated. This is the man she has trusted more than anyone else in the wolrd, her Angel of Music, and he has destroyed everything she's ever held dear, her faith, the memory of her father, and he's about to kill her lover as well. She really does hate him in that moment, she's not just angry at him. Which makes the fact that despite all that, she still shows compassion for him later all the more powerful. And it's doubly frustrating, because a better version does exist, they used it in the German version of the movie. " Ich hatte Mitgefühl, es ist verblast. Mein Herz weint nun weil es dich hasst!" (I had compassion, but it has faded. My heart now cries because it hates you!). It's not perfect, but it works better than the other one. I wish they would change it in the stage version as well ... - Ramblings of a Musical Theatre Nerd, Part I.

Another great Phantom, Nicky Wuchinger. "Sing für MICH!" (btw, the building in that picture is the Metronom Theater in Oberhausen, that's where I saw the show last month) Nicky Wuchinger is one the youngest actors to ever play the Phantom, I think. He is also super pretty, he kind of looks like Xander from Buffy. Last year I saw him as Raoul in Hamburg.

Basil What were those videos you were comparing to Emmy Rossum being bland in Phantom compared to someone else? I was at work so I didn't get to watch them before and now I can't find them.

Basil What were those videos you were comparing to Emmy Rossum being bland in Phantom compared to someone else? I was at work so I didn't get to watch them before and now I can't find them. I think it was this video of Sierra Boggess singing "Think of Me" with her heavenly soprano. And here is Emmy Rossum in the movie: It's not just the singing that is better in the stage version, the acting and the choreography are superior as well. Look at Sierra performing, there is so much energy, her face, her eyes are glowing. She's stunning, and not just because she's wearing a pretty dress. It's hard not to fall in love with her. In the movie, Emmy Rossum doesn't move at all, she just stands there like a statue, and her face doesn't really convey a lot of emotions either. Again, I don't blame her, she was young and unexperienced and she was probably given bad directions. I'm just pointing out why the movie sucks, not only did they cast mediocre singers, they also somehow managed to drain the songs of all energy and soul.
