PS: I also scored tickets to see Wicked a third time!!! Going with my friend who is taking her daughter as a reward for all straight A's this school year...and I am taking my duo as well!

Yeah, I didn't like Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet at all so I was pretty sceptical about it. But it has so much life and is well directed with a wonderful cast. Very enjoyable.

Though I can't bring myself ot call it bad, because it has 'Memory', which is one of my absolute favourite show tunes of all time. That song has always had a profound effect on me, and I don't know if it's because of the music, the lyrics, or a combination of both, but to me it's just pure, beautiful melancholy and nostalgia. It's hard to listen to it without tearing up a little bit. Also the character who sings it, Grizabella, is the only compelling character in the entire show.

The failure of Tanz der Vampire on Broadway is one of the saddest things that has ever happened in musical theatre history. They took this beautiful musical, and they turned it into a stupid, silly comedy. It's SOOO fucking corny. Like, I have no words, it's a tragedy. I could rant about this forever. For example, in the original German version, Herbert, the son of Count von Krolock, is gay, like it's not even implied, he straight up tries to fuck Alfred at one point. And that is a lighthearted, silly scene, but it's also legit scary and subtle, they dance with each other for a bit in a room full of mirrors, and because Herbert is a vampire, you can only see Alfred's reflection, which is an amazing little moment of stage magic. In the Broadway version, Herbert gives Alfred a sponge in the shape of a huge penis. That's the type of humour in the Broadway version. In the first scene between Sarah and Krolock, she says to him, "You're so cool.", all the while moaning as though he's fucking her, and he replies, "It's a very slow metabolism." Jesus Christ, what the fuck is this shit? Nothing like that can be found in the German version. It does feature comedic elements and comic relief characters, but it's all a million times more subtle. On Broadway, the entire show is basically presented as a stupid fucking joke. The German version is a horror story at heart, but it's also a parody of the vampire genre. It works really well. So when Krolock and Sarah sing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" at the beginning of Act 2, the audience starts laughing, as though it is all just one hilarious joke. Which is just the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen. But can you blame them, when up to that point Michael Crawford's Krolock has been portrayed as a caricature and a clown? When he starts singing this serious song, the audience responds by laughing, because it's a ridiculously dramatic scene in a ridiculously stupid show. How can they take this shit seriously when in a previous scene, there has been a huge sponge in the shape of a penis? Count von Krolock in the original German version is a menacing figure. In a show that features many comedic elements, he is what brings legit complexity and emotions into it, because nothing about him is funny. He is inspired by Dracula, but he is not a caricature or a parody, he is an old vampire, a lonely vampire, who equally hates and loves what he is, who enjoys playing with his prey and who despises himself for it. In his signature song "Unstillbare Gier", he sings about his self-hatred, he reminisces about some of the people he has killed, and he wishes for his endless thirst to finally end. It's an amazing song with great lyrics, and probably the emotional highlight in the musical. Michael Crawford's Krolock is nothing like that. He is a clown, there is no other word to describe him. He's not scary, in fact, he tells fucking jokes all the time. It's like he is played by Leslie Nielsen, if Leslie Nielsen was not funny at all but was trying way too hard. Also, they made him Italian and gave him an Italian accent for some fucking reason, even though the story takes place in Transylvania. He talks like a used car salesman, not like a century old vampire lord. And I feel bad for the girl who plays Sarah). The German version: I get so sad when I think about all of this. In it's original form, I think this show could have been a great success on Broadway. It features a great story, memorable characters, breathtaking stage design and a score that consists mostly of legendary rock music from the 80s. But they gave full creative control to an aging musical star who turned the show into one of the biggest flops in Broadway history. And that's just a tragedy.

My God Basil...what the hell happened here? Just looking at the makeup between the two actors shows how little thought was put into the Broadway version. German Krolock looks gorgeous and compelling!!! You are right that this had everything it took to be a Broadway hit. I know I would have and would today love to see this done right on the stage!

As much as I dislike the Broadway production of this show, this scene is actually really good. And the reason why it is so good is that it is one of the very few scenes that is faithful to the original German production. They didn't change anything, they didn't add unnecessary comedic elements that weren't already there. It's brilliant. Also Max von Essen is a wonderful, beautiful Alfred. I'm melting at his voice. This is from the Broadway production as well. Just listen to the music, it's sooo fucking good. Especially, especially the Prayer part towards the end (it starts around 9:20 in the video, seriously ... just listen to it ). Watching and listening to this live is an incredibly powerful experience. Who in their right mind would turn a show that has that kind of music into a stupid comedy?

A little bit of Phantom trivia regarding the chandelier crash. In the original production, it's a very slow decline, the chandelier is not really crashing as much as it is gracefully decending onto the stage. It looks kind of lame if you are only watching a video of it, but if you are actually there, it is still super impressive and dare I say chill inducing. Especially if you're sitting directly beneath it, which I have several times. And then it silently goes back up during intermission, which looks like this. And then we have the Las Vegas production, which is suuuuper cool. The chandelier is free falling onto the audience for a few seconds and right before it crashes (presumably killing everyone sitting beneath it), the room goes pitch black and you only hear dramatic crashing sounds. You can actually hear people in the audience scream as it goes down, it's amazing. When the lights go back on, the chandelier is back on the ceiling. In reality, it obviously doesn't ever reach the ground, it stops midair and ascends back to it's original position while the lights are still off ... but imagine being there and having that thing come towards you, and then everything going dark. This is what it looks like without the light going out: The tour production is interesting, because it doesn't actually always feature a crash, it really depends on the theatre. Sometimes, the chandelier just starts emitting lots of sparks, but doesn't move an inch, sometimes it falls, which looks like this. I kind of like it, because it's fast and the backdrop falls apart as well.
