I was wrong about this part of the synopsis. What was the purpose of that whole encounter, as far as the show's plot goes, do you think? We'll definitely be seeing the Tarlys again. Sam got himself a piece of Valyrian Steel. He may not be tearing through White Walkers with Jon, but he's now in the sensitive position of learning more and mass producing the tools needed to defeat them! It seems odd at this point in the game to send Sam out of the narrative, except for something like this. Earning a chain or two will be nice, but he's going to save the world by having the courage to stick it to his old man and stealing the Valyrian Steel that they need to defeat the White Walkers. Someone guessed elsewhere that the Mad King might have gone mad because he heard Bran. It occurs to me that a more likely scenario is that he heard Bloodraven. Maybe Bloodraven tried to warn him about things in visions. He could have accidentally screwed up Aerys the way Bran screwed up Hodor (but less severely, because of the warging.) Maybe Bloodraven saw a vision about the White Walkers coming and tried to warn Aerys about the need to prepare for them, and burn them, and those warnings drove him nuts and made him paranoid and obsessed with fire.I think you may have just hit the nail on the head @witchy . The thing that clinches it for me is the rapid succession of images we see flying past in Bran's vision. Every second of the Mad King and wildfire is then followed by an immediate scene of the Night King and the army of the undead. This is clearly a message. This was, at it's base level, the exact definition of "Ice and Fire" ... and Bran is clearly the key to bringing that message to the rest of Westeros along with his other siblings. Someone has to link Daenerys and her dragons to this because she will obviously learn very soon that the biggest battle is not against "the men in their iron suits" at all. The irony of her speech to her Khalasar seems lost on a few people here, truly. Why do you think they followed Benjen's warning to Bran about the Night King with Daenerys riding Drogon? It's to show the audience the clear link between Targaryen and Stark in the battle to come against the White Walkers. The Wildfire will likely become a far bigger key component than burning down King's Landing. As much as we would like to see Cersei burn it down, I think it's going to be far more valuable against the millions of undead on their way southward. The question is... who in King's Landing will support the cause that will be brought to them by the north? As we heard from lovely Dickon Tarly, most of the south still believes the White Walkers are just a myth. The flash back is almost entirely images of The Mad King intercut with images of the White Walkers in the show. They're establishing some type of connection, and I think there's a solid support for the theory that Bran somehow influences the Mad King with a misguided advice to 'burn them all.' The remaining piece of the flashback, I think, spells good news for Stoneheart fans. The purpose of the Horn Hill detour was to get Gilly looking presentable again. In fact, she looks beautiful. Girlfriend was oily and stank. Seriously, though, if it turns out to be a detour that doesn't advance the plot, it accomplished a lot as a detour. The spoiler people probably know which episode so and so Tarly will show up again anyway and are just kindly holding back the info. If so, continue to shut, please! Sam would love Gilly in a burlap sack, but it was nice to see her curls. I think this was a defining moment for the story. Remember how Tywin broke down Ice for some vanity weapons for his family? I think Sam does something similar but in a way that supplements the war against the White Walkers. So this shot of what's clearly Drogon flying over a city ... is that King's Landing? All the houses/rooftops are 'smoking' but I don't see any flames. Also, if Drogon or the other dragons were burning a city, we'd see obvious scorch damage from the outside right? This is a curious image indeed. That looks just like the shot from season four, but with more smoldering. It's definitely King's Landing from one of Bran's season four visions. The smoke may nor not indicate a burning just yet.

This was a good episode. The pacing was good, no scene felt weak. I quite liked the quick visions Bran was seeing in the beginning. "Burn them all!" Foreshadowing much? Benjen's return was awesome, though it would've been cooler IMO if he looked more like a White Walker except ordinary eyes.
There were also two great reintroductions - Walder Frey and Drogon. The Frey part was really good, I gotta love old Walder even if he's a little weasel. Edmure looks so beaten up. Well, that's not surprising as he's been in a dungeon for about a year.
Dany's scene was great, Drogon is fucking huge now. I think it's now obvious that Dany will sail west with the Iron Fleet. "Who has thousand ships?"
Horn Hill parts were also good, Randyll Tarly instantly became one of my most hated characters. I wonder if we'll see him again this season?
Also, Mace's speech was truly masterful. That's a man I'd follow to the field of battle.

...And what have you done with the real Roose?

Roosey is in need of a good villain figure since Roose's departure. Enter Walder tonight.

Anyone notice the Kingsguard came out of the Sept with armor showing the faith star on it, rather than the Baratheon Kingsguard armor that Jaime had?

Spoilers from the preview chapter Valyrian steel armour Anyone notice the Kingsguard came out of the Sept with armor showing the faith star on it, rather than the Baratheon Kingsguard armor that Jaime had? Yeah. So Jaime is not part of the Kingsguard anymore? I didn't get if he was only stripped of his rank as the Lord Commander, or fully expelled from the order.

Now that I think about it, it was probably just a nag at Tommen.

I need some good gifs of Dany & Drogon. I have to say that I was a little weary about how they would do the graphics for Dany flying Drogon in Westeros, but my fears were put to rest after last night. I'm going to look in tunmblr, I'm sure they have something good there.

I'm so glad they improved the CGI of Dany flying Drogon. It looked absolutely hideous back in 5x09.
