-Viserys, Robert, Ned, and Drogo all biting it in consecutive episodes is pretty crazy. They all left big impacts on the show, every actor killed it. 3 kings and a King's Hand, only s3 has a comparable major character death count. Yeah I was trying to think of a run of eps that had as many big deaths. The end of season four had Oberyn/Ygritte/Shae/Tywin plus Jojen/Pyp/Grenn and Sandor left for dead but I don't think it compares.

Frances Magee was superb in the role. His scene with Arya, when he tell her about his revenge against the man who killed his brother is awesome. The sadness and rage in his voice...

Only Grenn had a comparable badass last stand.

I really like how they gave him a story that would inspire Arya's pray.

1.08 and 1.09 are two of my favorites. Just re-watched Blackwater, it never gets old. One thing I always wonder about is who the Hound was drinking with in that scene with Bronn. It's nice that Sandor had a friend, though. Or at least a casual drinking acquaintance. I always assumed that was his squire.

Or Gregor 1.0's squire.

I just learned that my husband watched Hardhome without me last night. I've been waiting on pins and needles to see his reaction to it. He is in big big trouble.

Cogman is back tweeting his top ten episodes tonight. He did And Now His Watch is Ended earlier tonight and is on What is Dead May Never Die right now. Apparently, this was his first real script for the show because he started writing his episode in season 1 as a writing exercise that he thought D&D had assigned to him. He had no idea it was real until he was far into it.

We watched The Dance of Dragons last night. My husband said "well, Stannis just went from okay to monster in 10 minutes." I got chills when Drogon showed up. Again.
I still really think it was a mistake to include those two parts in the same episode, and especially back to back. I get that they were able to thematically link them with a title, but one needs time after seeing what happens to Shireen. It should have closed an episode.

Dany riding Drogon was supposed to be a "fuck yeah!" moment, but it was so hard to forget those screams of agony... It was kind of weird. I didn't know how I felt after the episode. By the way, what did your husband say about Hardhome?

I wanted to ask him questions, but I was afraid I'd accidentally spoil him on the finale, so I'm waiting. We're watching it tonight.

I'm struggling to understand how someone can like 5x09 more than Hardhome. One of the weakest episodes of the season IMO. And no, I'm not biased.

Actually, I was answering Barristan's question about Hardhome. Hardhome was definitely his favorite! He did really enjoy the dragon scene, but not nearly as much as the Night's King stuff.

Finished season two on my rewatch Some random thoughts. -The stars of the season are Peter Dinklage and Maise Williams (with an honorable mention to Alfie Allen). They both have so much chemistry with whoever they are on screen with. -Kings Landing absolutely makes this season. I mentioned Dinklage but Jack Gleeson and Lena Headey deserve shouts. Honestly everybody in KL kills it except for the weak link Shae. Blackwater is classic shit, never gets old. -The Dragonstone crew were perfectly cast and integrated into the show. Didn't have much of a problem with any of their portrayals this season. -Yoren was a straight boss, arguably the most badass death on the show. Aryas storyline was my second favorite of the season besides KL. Having her be Tywins cupbearer was a good choice. -The start of the neglect of Cats character. I did enjoy the little of her and Brienne together we got. Robb's storyline starts off strong until he meets Talisa. Not gonna lie it was hard for me not to tune out whenever she was on screen. You can tell in Talisas (and Rooses) introductory scene in 2x4 that Roose Bolton doesn't respect Robb at all. Robb is such a fucking idiot -Speaking of idiots. Im sympathetic to Theon but at the same time find it hard to even feel sorry that he gets Reeked. Everything he does this season pisses me off. Him killing Ser Rodrick was a fucking tremendous scene. -Probably the weakest year for Jon, he's just too much of a bumbling idiot. Also the ending of the season with the White Walker looking right at Sam and then the horde of wights just passing him by always bothered me. -Daenerys storyline feels like her own different lesser show more than ever this season. I understand there is only so much you can do to make her Clash of Kings stuff work on screen though. Overall it's a better season than I remembered. Drags a little bit in the 5-8 eps but Blackwater more than makes up for it.

By the way, what did your husband say about Hardhome? YES! This was exactly how I felt. In fact it took me going back and watching the Fighting Pit / Drogon scene again by itself repeatedly on Youtube to erase my bad feelings about that episode overall because dovetailing the beauty of Dany's first flight on Drogon on the back of Shireen's horrific screams and the utter despair I felt from that scene was really jolting and felt too wrong. I felt like they overestimated their 'artistic' parallels with the screaming crowd of the fighting pit and the obvious fire/burning people. It was just ... wrong.

Shireen's death scene is so beautiful (not that way) I've rewatched it plenty times. I rewatched 5x10 few days ago, and I must say, I would've liked Stannis' death more had they ended with the Bolton cavalry surrounding his vanguard. While the fight scene with those two Bolton soldiers was great, it could've been cut IMO. That way it would've been more tragic for Brienne as well, because she left Sansa to avenge Renly, but failed that as well.

"What Is Dead May Never Die" and "Blackwater" are up there in my list of favorite episodes ever. And yeah, Dany and Jon storylines were probably their weakest so far. I kind of understand it with Daenerys, her book arc was extremely boring in ACoK (at least for me), and there were some fun moments here and there. But Jon... Sadly, his relationship with the Halfhand, pivotal in his character development, was not well portraiyed in the show.

I found this on Reddit and it pretty much sums up my thoughts on the Bolton dynamics in the show. The books clearly introduced the Boltons as a father and his son, while the show has a son and his father. I obviously like both Rams and Roose, but I just like Roose more.

Nearly through s2. And one episode that always sticks out to me in an imho otherwise weak season (other than 203 and 209 the usual suspects) is ep. 207. The Theon and Jaime scenes in particular stand out (I'm one of those people who doesn't give a flying fuck that he killed Alton ). NCW grinning as he's brought back to the camp by that huge group of Northmen beating him up is a quintessential pre-amputation Jaime moment. You have to respect him almost despite his being such a douche because he truly is fearless. And then of course Michelle Fairley is amazing in that scene with her "AND GAG HIM!" punchline to the scene. As for the Theon material it's just Alfie Allen's reaction shot at the end of the episode after the charred corpses of the farmer's sons are pulled up just says everything. My only complaint is that it faded to black instead of letting us look at that expression for longer. It really prefigures a lot of his great silent work as Reek more recently. No matter how much his sister disapproved of his laziness and pot-smoking back in the day, Alfie's an immense talent. That's got to be one of the best episode-ending moments the show's done really. Because even more so than his face after killing Rodrick you feel for this guy doing these horrible things. Which is quite a feat.
