I can only speak for myself, of course, but I too think Stephen Dillane deserved award attention. I didn't like book Stannis at all. I found him single-minded and humorless to the point of being irritating. Not so show Stannis. Dillane made him real for me, a believably cold but strong character. And I came to like him enough that his death was emotional for me. I wasn't affected like real Stannis fans, but I was affected. I would give him all of the awards for the incredibly subtle looks on his face when 1) Shireen burned and 2) he realized he was fucked and he pulled out his sword anyway. I feel the same. It was only knowing Dillane from John Adams that made me at all interested in the Stannis character initially going into s2. And it was only because I could picture him as Dillane, instead of a bald guy with a beard voiced by Roy Dotrice, while reading the books and listening to the audiobooks that I came to like him in them. Dillane made him a human being and his acting. particularly in 509 and 510, is among the best in the show yet. He is great at giving an understated line delivery and playing the emotions behind such a low-key, antisocial guy.

Well, simply in terms of Emmys yes, he is a supporting actor. Too many episodes for guest but not part of the main. Yeah, but as you said, one must be in the main cast to be eligible for the lead or supporting actor categories. Wait, are we sure that's true? Pryce is in too many episodes to qualify for guest actor, but can't be a supporting actor because he's not in the opening credits? That doesn't make sense. Dinklages best seasons were 2 and 4. Peter is a great actor though, those are just the two series where he had the best material to work with. He had great scenes in 3 as well, but not as good as the trial or Blackwater. The best consistent actors IMO were Michelle Fairley and Richard Madden, Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham and Carice Van Houten, Peter Dinklage and Charles Dance, Kit Harrington and Kristofer Hivju. Just saying, the scenes where those people were working with each other are golden. Each group had a great chemistry between them. Really? I know folks around here have a hard on for him, but I think he probably gives the weakest performance in the show. A classic example of a younger actor over-emoting too much.

Richard gets bonus points for nailing the accent. That's something that even michelle couldn't do

Richard gets bonus points for nailing the accent. That's something that even michelle couldn't do I don't think either Kit or Richard started out being very good at the Sean Bean impression/Sheffield accent and there are a number of moments where I could hear that Richard was a Scotsman. Both had more consistent accents after s1 but I think they did so more by toning down the accents they'd been attempting in the first season rather than actually getting better at the Northern thing they were trying. I can't actually recall a moment where Michelle's NI accents were audible in the sort of Received Pronunciation accent she was doing for Cat but I'm sure there are a few instances in there you could point out, with you being British and all.

Michelle's NI accent was pretty much ever-present I don't think she ever managed to get rid of it completely

I'm just an ignorant American so I'm not very good at discerning the subtle differences of the UK dialects. The only accent that ever feels off to me is Peter's.

Yeah Richard definitely nailed the Sheffield accent better than anyone else who had to put it on.
Peter's isn't as bad as a lot of people claim. He just over-enunciates, with the odd slip into his natural American, but it very rarely bothers me. He's also got better over time, Season 5 had the fewest noticeable accent problems for him.

I'm also a colonial myself (a Canadian) but I've always been big on accents so I pick up on some of these things. But yeah Dinklage's accent is all over the place. Particularly in s1. Sometimes his accent would jump from being Cockney-sounding to Received Pronunciation within a sentence back then. He's improved at it since but he still slips up quite a bit.

Dinklage's accent is awful. Like, really really bad.

While we're talking about accents btw, do any of y'all ever notice that Maisie sometimes slips into her Bristol sortof West Country burr? Not so much in the show but she tries not to do it in interviews (I dunno why) but then it always manages to come out.

Or more correctly he sounded cockney when he said "Oh did I" and then posh again when he said, "I've been a very busy man."

I don't get too worked up over accents, I just want the performances to be convincing and the emotions to seem genuine. I'm just glad I can understand all of the dialogue. I don't think I understood a goddamn word the first time I watched Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.

Because really he's Tyrion's not English he's Westerosi. But still because he's trying to sound English I pick up on it. It doesn't diminish his performance too much for me though.

Maybe he should just go full on Jersey with his accent and give Tywin another reason to hate him.

Yeah his accent just doesn't bother me very often, that's the only way I can really judge it. I think people sometimes confuse an issue in dialect with just having a weird-sounding voice, which he does but is fairly consistent with, usually unless he's raising his voice like in Blackwater, or being unsure about whether to use a soft or hard 'a', which is something that most of England can't even agree on! It's certainly no Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, which just sounds unnatural throughout.

Yeah, she tries to cover it up but she usually slips up and gives herself away as the proud owner of a combine harvester.

The only time I can recall really hearing it strongly on the show is when she says to Ned in the "Syrio says" scene IIRC in ep. 104 "and every hurt is a lesson." Which with the Bristol accent sounds more like "and every hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt is a lesson."

Is that a country accent? It still sounds more refined than most of the southern accents I hear in the States.
