It just occurred to me the irony of Shireen reading about the Dance of Dragon. It was a war between brother and sister - family vs. family fighting for power. They destroyed themselves in the end and killed the dragons too But for poor Shireen there is no fight.  I just can't imagine having to listen tonight to that child screaming. Makes me want to flay Stannis and that asshole red witch on the spot.
I debating to either mute it or skip ahead. I already watched the clip and it was too horrifying. That poor little girl. Melissandre needs to die a very painful death. I would love for Davos to kill her but I'm afraid for him because of her magic. So I'll hope one of the dragons eat her using the real fire magic. Randome me note but I remember this theory I read once about how each element had two sides. The Others vs The First Men magics and The R'hollr vs. The Valyrian magic. It was interesting. |

Just because GRRM is the author doesn't mean he can't commit character assassinations as well. My biggest gripe with Stannis burning Shireen is not that he probably won't do it in the books, but because D&D wrote him pretty well this season until this point. They established a very close relationship between him and his daughter, much better than in the books, I'd say, which is why I said before that I found show!Stannis a more sympathetic character than his book counterpart. So the problem is that it's out of character for show!Stannis, who clearly loves his daughter more than book!Stannis, to burn her alive. If GRRM decided to do the same thing the same way in the books if the show didn't exist, it would also be character assassination. It's not character assassination. It's a character arc that has escalated over the past four seasons and culminated in more and more unspeakable acts. The Stannis of season 2 would not have done it- but then again, the Stannis of season 2 did not trust Melisandre the way the Stannis of season 5 does. He has swallowed her snake oil and is now absolutely desperate. Again, it's a wonderful parallel with the story of AA and Nissa Nissa. If you believe that you are the one to save the world (NM if it is true or not), what lengths would you go to in order to do it? If it required a sacrifice of the only person you truly loved to save humanity, could you do it? We may not get the story of Nissa Nissa in the show, but this is a clear parallel. I see no character assassination. I see a man who has been corrupted and led to destroy everything dear to him by the promise of power. As another poster said, it's a Greek tragedy. Also, GRRM is just as guilty of poor writing as D&D at times. But overall, all three do a great job and have built an incredible entertainment empire. Again, I think you are right in principle about the parallels with the story of AA and Nissa Nissa. But the show didn't do a very good job of conveying it. Without the books, I for one wouldn't have seen it. When it comes to the show, you really have to look through a magnifying glass in order to find many references to Azor Ahai at all. Sure, Melisandre talks about it, but Stannis himself seems more concerned with becoming king than anything else. All of my Unsullied friends think that Stannis is a power-hungry man who shags a religious fanatic more often than he should and who is blind to reason. The hero of a Greek tragedy is a hero who is morally better than most people, but has a fatal flaw that causes his downfall. I can see book!Stannis being that, but not show!Stannis. The latter might bear some slight resemblance to the former, but the "morally better than most people" part doesn't come across clearly enough. in contrast, his fatal flaw is almost too clear. |

People who have seen it have confirmed both deaths and one of the video clips that leaked was actually of Shireen's burning (before it happened, not during thank the gods). |

I feel devastaded. Not in the "angry at the show" way. Like when Catelyn hangs Brienne, and you feel like you're swalling a frog. Only now I feel a hundred times worse. I cannot like Stannis anymore, neither root for him, at least on the show. I expected that much from Melisandre anyway, but I expected more from Stannis.
And I thought we would have Hizdahr in season 6, as the Harpy or not. Meereen seems pretty empty with no meereenese characters

The thing that most impresses me is that we all practically know everything that will happen in this episode, yet I am more thrilled than ever to watch it.
I ran out of alcohol though, and that's not a good thing.
Now, since here is something like 1:30 AM and there's a damn thunderstorm outside, I am conflicted between facing Shereen burning sober or running to the chinese 24/7 and get something really strong.
