I do, yeah. Whether it's implied or explicit (gods forbid) sexual torture porn of virginal young women has been a staple of sick underground porn forever. For HBO to go there would just, well, make me sick. And would certainly lose the PTV Unsullied. And I'd guess, a million viewers world-wide, as well. Just hope they don't go there, is all.
But worse things happen in the books. Is it the visual medium of portraying it that is the problem? One of the problems is the victim. We are talking about Sansa, a teen on the show, a major character and fan favorite getting brutally raped.

Sure, that would cause an outrage, but big enough to make thousands of people abandon the entire show? I doubt it.

The series gains viewers consistently regardless of what goes up on the screen. It's silly to think that people will stop watching (or that the number won't be made up by far more new viewers) just because it has some disturbing content.
I also think people are really overreacting to what they think they're going to see here. Sansa's not getting raped or tortured. She'll be put in an extremely uncomfortable and dangerous position but y'know, stuff will happen and she'll be able to get out of it before anything especially awful occurs. The audience will worry for her (as they should) but she'll make it through more or less unscathed.
I'm actually going with the notion that it will be a jealous Myranda who will try and harm Sansa before Ramsay even has a chance to and that will be what spurs Theon on to save her but we'll wait and see.

I also really, really hope that, whatever happens, Sansa doesn't need Theon to save her. Turning her into a damsel in distress would just be a further regression of her character.

She's going to need someone's help and this is Theon's arc as well. They can do this without her being a blubbering Jeyne Poole-style damsel in distress. Did everyone get upset when Jaime saved Brienne from the bear? She's not going to ninja herself away from the Boltons on her own.

The numbers may be replaced by those who join the audience but it's not "silly" to think that people will stop watching. It happened. It's a fact. The number may be small, but it happened. It's the same as with people who deem the show too boring - "I won't watch it because it's boring" - and they don't watch it anymore. This group of people simply didn't like the content or in the instance I was talking about the change from the books + rape scene between Cersei and Jaime I also really, really hope that, whatever happens, Sansa doesn't need Theon to save her. Turning her into a damsel in distress would just be a further regression of her character. I think that Theon will help Sansa. But that doesn't really change the course of where the show has her - saved by Hound. Saved by Dontos. "Saved" by LF....

This group of people simply didn't like the content or in the instance I was talking about the change from the books + rape scene between Cersei and Jaime. The original contention is that the show will "lose viewership". It won't. People stop watching shows all the time for various reasons. And new people start watching the show that have no problem with whatever made others stop watching. On GoT, this has always been a significant net positive in growth. So for whatever people who stop watching because of one scene (I guess they exist but it seems ridiculous to me) there will be significantly more that take their place and have no issues with it. So that concern is "silly" to raise. The show won't miss a beat in viewership even if they put some mean things up on the screen. I would say we're 5 seasons in and the audience has a very strong idea of what to expect when they turn on GoT. I put the number of people who quit the show because of an explicit scene at the same number of people who stopped reading the books altogether because of an explicit chapter. I've never, ever encountered anyone like this but it's possible they exist.

Fair enough. But I think we're past the point of making sweeping generalizations like "the show will lose lots of viewers because they choose to depict x kind of scene". We've got more than enough evidence over time to know that this is an incredibly unlikely conclusion.
If you're saying that a certain group of fans will be upset and make a lot of noise on the internet, then yeah, we agree totally.

I love how some things don't change from medium to medium. The folks on NeoGAF had a pretty heated Dany vs. Stannis debate today, and Stannis is winning

My thoughts on the show are usually like this "Stannis YAY, where is Stoneheart and did the writers forget about (insert omission)?"

Ha, Theon gets no sympathy from the PTV Unsullied. Someone posted this, basically saying that no one deserves what's happened to Theon: and then, this..(bold mine) Theon the little fuckwit who's been diced, sliced and chopped like a carrot!
