307 isn't terrible necessarily, it's just excruciatingly uneventful. Not to mention the centrepiece scene to close out the episode is fairly low-key (mostly because of the decision to use a real bear which forced them to do an awful lot of separate shots). Well i thought it was pretty good for an episode 7. and the brienne vs bear thing was exciting to me. i don't remember the filming of it too much but its kinda cool they used a real bear. I agree, I liked Bear and the Maiden Fair (maybe I rate it higher because of naked Richard Madden). I thought it was an above average episode. I'd say 3X06 was my least favorite episode. I did not find season 1 to be 100% faithful to the books but I guess it was the season that probably most closely followed the book. I think one worked so well for me, was that the character arcs were more defined. Particularly the arcs of Ned, Dany, Robb and Jon were well done. Edit to add, I agree with ladystoneboobs that the KiTN scene would have made a better ender than the dragons, considering how episode 9 ended. I felt much more emotion in that scene then I did when the dragons were hatched.

It's hysterical that everyone hates The Bear and the Maiden Fair when it was written by GRRM Some of the scenes that ended up in that episode weren't written by GRRM though.

The characters stories still made sense in season 3 so i can't complain. I have to disagree though, i thought ending the season with dragons was awesome! i hadn't read the books at this point so i was amazed and totally cheering for dany.

07-10 were my favourites. I thought that Season 1 suffered a little because it was still quite low budget and finding its feet (see the Hand's Tourney, for example. Looks very cheap) but still my all around favourite. The final 4 episodes were brilliant though, definite standouts. Season 1 is the most consistent season imo. Inconsistency is probably one of my biggest problems with the show,mI just find it too hit and miss at times.

I agree with King Tommen. First half of Season 1 is weak sauce. People were easy on it because they wanted the show to succeed, and because it's basically the books verbatim. The scene composition is poor, the exposition is off the scale clunky. "THAT'S JAIME LANNISTER, THE KINGS BROTHER". Episode 5 is where the show got good.
As for the best string -
301-305
The first two episodes of Season 3 aren't too strong, but the first half of Season 3 gradually builds on each episode, and climaxes fantastically between And Now His Watch Is Ended and Kissed by Fire. It almost serves as it's own mini season. Second half isn't as strong thanks to 306 and 307.
406-410
Fantastic. So many great moments and climaxes that have been building for seasons. Execution wobbles in some places but still great.

To clarify, I think Dany's is the clear choice for drama but the KitN belonged near the end too, Cat's last chapter is right before Dany's in the book and it really feels like one bam! moment and then another. I think the show should have gone KitN-Jon-Dany. Right from the start the Young Wolf sl took a backseat to King's Landing having its ending before Pycelle/Ros, Cersei/Lancel, LF/Varys and Tyrion/Tywin. The exposition in the pilot is the worst, like the bit where Ned is told about the deserter, Cat asks him if he really has to go and he reminds her it's the law, as if she isn't used to him doing his job and that's the best way to tell us what Ned's job is.
