Yeah, as cool as the battle sequences are, this season is lacking in character moments, everything they show is plot related and is just not natural.
Yes we had a little moment between Missandei and Dany, who we already know are good friends. But Arya, Bran and Sansa are together again after years, and they talk about Pedofinger's dagger and not Robb, Cat and Rickon? Is Sansa really ok with Arya not really answering how she came back home? Is Arya not interested in knowing what happened to her siblings during all this years? Do none of them want to shake Bran a little to see if he shows some emotion?

Why didn't Arya ask about Rickon? Probably Sansa told Arya about it off-screen, and Bran knows about it through his visions. Rickon was so handsome that day outside Winterfell...

I think we'll get more conversations in the episodes to come. DaveyJoe I disagree slightly, i think Emilia has done a fantastic job with Dany this season. I would say it's more her character that is getting on people nerves. Her dumbest moment this episode was burning the food stores. And i think Jon and Dany's chemistry is undenieable. Although i wasn't one of their shippers and doesn't think it's a good idea.

But we did get the "reflective reunion" with Arya and Sansa when they talked in the crypt, didn't we? They talked about Ned, besides we've already had Sansa and Jon spend plenty time talking about the past - "we never should have left Winterfell". Plus Sansa's already tried casually talking with Bran and it's clear to her that he's so emotionally detached that he's not the same. Like Meera said, "Bran" died in the cave. It's nice to see them together again, but they have all changed so much from when they last saw each other that they're almost different people. It's "bittersweet". But they never once mention hose who are absent. What about Cat? What about Rickon? And Robb? I'm glad they didn't recite their entire six seasons of adventures (quite deftly done by Arya and Sansa's dialogue here, actually) but some kind of mention of their mother or lost siblings would be nice. I don't think Jon and Sansa have spent very long talking about the past actually Stuff happened off-screen that needed to happen off-screen but there hasn't been much talk of what they have all lost. I dunno, it's a reunion that fans have been waiting for for years, and it's just falling very flat. I don't expect the reunited the Starks to go over all of the trauma they have seen and been through...but so much in their lives and what they've known have been lost and we are not even seeing them mention their lost family members. There is a great opportunity in this episode when they mention that Ned's statue didn't look him that they could have said, we'll make sure Mother, Robb and Rickon's statue look like them. Does Sansa know that Arya saw what the Frey's did to Robb's body? Does Sansa know that Arya killed them all? The show has been honing in on how they all have changed and rightfully so but there doesn't seem to be mourning or talk of the lost. It is falling flat.

Although i wasn't one of their shippers and doesn't think it's a good idea. I wish I could agree. Jon and Dany had some of the most compelling chapters in the books, but I really struggle with their performances in the show. I think they're both very limited actors with little range. Kit really excels at physical acting and action scenes, and Emilia hits her stride with emotional moments. The House of the Undying scene where Dany sees Drogo is amazing, I really wish we had more scenes like that in later season. Kit's gotten more of his strong moments as the show goes on, but Emilia has gotten less fewer. I think you're right that a lot of it has to do with the writing. Dany could be a frustrating, stubborn character in the books, but George did a great job balancing out her vulnerable moments as well, while the show just kind of removes all depth from her. The thing is that Emilia hasn't impressed in anything else yet, she sucked in Terminator, reports are that she's bad in Han Solo as well, so I can't help but wonder if a better actor could overcome the writing lapses for Dany's story. I think some of Lady Olenna's lines could have felt clunky if they weren't performed by Diana Rigg with such amazing authority and sass. But you're right that it's unfair for me to place all of the blame at Emilia's feet. Most of the suck is coming from the writing, but Emilia as a weak actress is unable to elevate the material.

I wonder how much time they spend on dialogue scenes as opposed to crazy battles. Especially with outdoors shooting like the gorgeous location at Dragonstone, I bet they don't have a lot of time before the light is ruined by shadows and contrast. I should go back and watch to see if Dany's indoor scenes are better because Emilia could do more takes since they have more control over the lighting.
