This week I watched Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil and Phantasm. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil is so silly and fun. It's told from the point of view of two weird-looking hillbillies that a bunch of college students think are pyscho killers, but they're actually not killers. Lots of people get killed in ridiculous and amusing ways, though. And it stars Wash from Firefly. Phantasm is one of those movies I was always told I needed to watch. It was definitely spooky and pretty and freaky, and the soundtrack IS GREAT. The premise, once you realize what is happening, is the most ridiculous, absurd plot I've ever heard of in my life. Aliens have been living on Earth, taking dead people from a morgue, cutting them down half-size, making them weird dwarf slaves, and then sending them through a portal to another planet to crack rocks.

I have been moving into the new apartment this week while also trying to keep up with watching movies, so I haven't had time to write reviews. I have also been way behind on my video so I've been working on that. The fact that the group wants me to make another video to promote the Challenge has me pretty busy. I should be able to post more when I am all moved in and have internet setup.
I will say that since my last post, I loved Krampus, very entertaining movie. I also really liked Hush on Netflix, minimalist nut suspenseful cat and mouse thriller. Argento's Tenebrae was fantastic, but only for Giallo fans.
I also bought the Neon Demon and I'm planning on watching it before the end of the month. From what I hear it should qualify for the Challenge.

Honestly I'm impressed you got that much from the first film. Did you look up info online? I watched the first three films and they get crazier and crazier and it's a challenge putting the story together, but that's part of the fun. The sequel gets more campy and fun, but I love the atmosphere of the original.

No, I just thought it was obvious that was what was happening when the kid looked through the portal and saw what he saw. It's really poor design when all it takes is for someone to put both hands on the tuning fork thingies at the same time to disrupt your portal to another planet/dimension/whatever. It does have a really cool atmosphere. I think it owes a lot to the soundtrack. I knew it was going to be fun when there were boobies, graveyard sex, and a murder all in like the first five minutes, or less, but it ended up being a completely different kind of fun than I was thinking it would be. Also, I am sexist, because I don't get upset when I see a woman stab a man, but I do get upset when I see a man stab a woman.

You know there's a lot of sexual symbolism in the slasher genre. A hulking, male killer penetrating female victims with a phallic weapon, and they always end with a 'final girl' overcoming and defeating him I'm a moment of empowerment. There were several books that argued the genre is more feminist than we might think. Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in Modern Horror is one I've heard good things about.
You also might enjoy the movie: Slumber Party Massacre. It was written by a woman as a parody of the slasher genre, but they filmed it as a serious horror movie, so it has a lot of unintentional comedic moments and unnecessary nudity. The killer's choice of weapon? A big, long drill.

Yeah, there's definitely sexual symbolism in those movies, and there is often a rapey/penetrating element to the scenes that upset my equilibrium. It's like a combination of rapey stuff, shock, and certain types of bodily harm/mutilation. It does happen with male victims, like Willem Dafoe in Antichrist, but it mostly happens with female characters.

Which oddly enough felt more misogynistic to me than any of the 80s Slashers I've seen. It's incredibly misogynistic. I bent my brain around trying to think of a way that it was smarter than that when I was watching, but it was really pretty simple. The woman was studying feminine empowerment, and she lost her child and role as a mother. The combination of those two things drove her stark raving mad, and she communed with all that is dark and unholy in nature and started mutilating herself and her husband. Well, okay then. Women can't be trusted to be rational or have power. Got it. With 80s slashers, the misogyny comes in, I think, in the fact that seeing women get killed is presented as titillating. But the truth is the killers aren't killing them because they're women. They're killing them because they are psychos who aren't able to have normal sexual relationships, and they happen to be hetero and like girls. *shrugs* If Michael Myers had been gay, he would have had a different main target in mind, I think.

DaveyJoe or anyone else: is the second conjuring as good as the first? I heard Annabelle was shit but the actual sequel is supposed to be okay. Should I bother?

I was so confused because a feminist friend of mine raved about AntiChrist but to me it just seemed completely misogynistic. Great cinematography, but it just made me feel icky. It's all about tone and context. This was a serious movie, whereas most Slashers feel much more light-hearted. The vast majority of them are a out a killer stalking couples, so the genders of the victims is pretty even. As for Halloween, I'm not sure it's appropriate to approach Michael Myers fron a psychological standpoint. Dr. Loomis describes him as being pure evil, that he had a vacant stare, and sat silently for years waiting for his chance to kill again. It wasn't until Rob Zombie's remake that they tried to humanize Michael Myers and explain his motivation. In the original he is the embodiment of evil, and in the credits they simply describe him as The Shape. What makes that film so terrifying is the killer's lack of humanity and the fact the Michael Myers violates the sanctity and safety of middle class suburbia. This was at a time when you could still ride your bike and leave your door unlocked without a care in the world. DaveyJoe or anyone else: is the second conjuring as good as the first? I heard Annabelle was shit but the actual sequel is supposed to be okoay. Should I bother? The Conjuring 2 was very good. It's perhaps not as scary as the first, but still has its moments. It also does a great job developing and making you care for the characters, which can be rare in horror films.

Baskin was super gross, but so well shot. That director has a bright future ahead of him. The entire production was great, I especially liked the music and how it blended with the sound effects. At one point there was an ominous bass drum, then it turned out to be the cult leader walking down the stairs. And how creepy was that guy? Gave me the shivers. This was kind of like a new age, Turkish Hellraiser, but even more disgusting.
