We have people here from all over the globe. (Yay!) On the date of one your country's national holidays, pop in here and tell us, the rest of the world, something about your country's special day, so we can all share in it. You can include... A very short history of how the holiday came about Why this date of the year? What activities/celebrations are customary Can't wait to hear from all our international members! Please confine your posts to the actual date of your holiday, just like we do with the birthday posts. :snape:

Today's May 1st. May Day! Not a specific national holiday of any one country, but historically, a significant date on the annual calendar, with ancient rites and festivals celebrated across the Western world. In Celtic history, today begins Beltane, a festival during which people built huge night fires and danced around them in the same direction the sun travels across the sky. This led to the dance around the May pole in many villages, basically a pagan-based festival celebrating the sun, the return of warmth and a time of plenty.
Anybody got any stories or memories from their elders about the traditions associated with May Day? Happy May Day, everybody!

Well in Poland May 1st is Labour Day so it's a day off and I don't need to be at work today which is perfect because as a Wiccan I celebrate Beltane ^^

May 1st in the USA is Law Day. The rationale for this American Bar Association created creature is stated thus: "Law Day is a special day aimed to help people appreciate their liberties and to affirm their loyalty to the United States, especially with regard to equality and justice. It also aims to cultivate respect for the law, which is vital to the democratic way of life." The vast majority of lawyers take pains to ignore this "holiday" as it's just feels fairly embarrassing. Particularly true this year given the events in Baltimore and elsewhere.

In Britain we have Guy Fawkes Night. It's not so much a holiday though, more a kind of yearly celebration with lots of bonfires and fireworks. It is a bit of an odd tradition though because it's celebrating someone who tried to blow up the houses of parliament. I don't think the individual constituent countries of the UK have their own individual holidays though. St Andrew's Day isn't really celebrated here. At least not widely. Idk if England celebrate St George's Day or if Wales celebrate St David's Day though, they might. Burns Night is celebrated in Scotland though actually. Usually with some haggis

I missed this one. May 3rd. Polish Constitution Day. On that day, Poland became the first European nation to have a written constitution, the second overall after the birth of the USA. ETA - Oh! I'm of Polish decent, so this counts as a holiday for me.

6th of December. Finland's independence day. You won't ever guess what happened that day in 1917.
We became independent.
