I'm still curious why anyone who knows how to read would watch something with dubbing.

I never considered how dubbing would ruin that scene in other languages. How interesting. Hodor really is specific to English so I hope people in other countries 'got it' via other methods if they only watch in their native language. Sub-titles has to be better for that - at least you still hear the original in English. *edit: Also just occurred to me that if non-english foreigners were watching that with sub-titles and don't know much english at all, they certainly just got one english phrase burnt into their brains permanently. The out-of-context dark humor in that is, well, sad but hilarious. I am pretty sure Hodor is not the only instance where translations will turn out to distort the meaning. GRRM has a few moments with deliberately misleading or ambiguous wording, and translators will very easily, or likely have chosen the wrong meaning. "Looked to" Stark is a prime example. I would bet this was almost universally translated as "looked at" Stark, which will turn out to be very wrong. Thankfully the show will avoid that one because they have mainly skipped the Harrenhal backstory entirely.

I'm still curious why anyone who knows how to read would watch something with dubbing. I think it's dubbing in a lot of countries - Germany, France...here I believe it's just one guy - lector. But it makes the original lines hard to hear. I don't know if HBO has subtitles option here but a lot of people just watch it with lector. I don't watch anything on our TV here, sometimes a movie in the background if I already seen it.

I'm still curious why anyone who knows how to read would watch something with dubbing. Because if you live in a country where dubbing is the norm you get used to it. Because countries where dubbing is the norm don't make it that easy to find things in O.V. Because some people don't like reading subtitles. Because other people don't like to watch a show/movie if they can't understand what they're hearing. I hate dubbing, but there are reasons why is something a lot of countries do.

In Russia they don't even bother to disable the original audio

Half of the WW2 documents I've seen (most are British) have been made like that.

I really hope your cartoons and other kids' shows had proper dubbing at least, otherwise I'd feel really sorry for your childhood. Imagine watching Powerpuff Girls with a single deep voiced dude dubbing for all the characters, I'd be traumatized

Imagine watching Powerpuff Girls with a single deep voiced dude dubbing for all the characters, I'd be traumatized I feel that I have to stand up for lectors. In this version you can hear the original audio and a voice that translates the dialogues. The actors' voices are only a little bit quieter than the original version and clearly hear the whole spectrum of their emotions, etc. While watching the voiceover quickly blends into the background and is sufficiently neutral to the original soundtrack dominated, and at the same time does not sound artificial and impersonal. Being a voice actor is considered in the acting community for the more difficult part of the profession, and being a lector is specific, because at the same time you need to express emotions and to be neutral, you have become a part of the background. I did not even realize how the voices of those few lectors are close to me and are part of everyday life, until I saw a video of an interview with one of them (T. Knapik), it was mind-blown experience I had it made straight, because you know, be suspected of one of those shitty kind of dubbing in TV, it is almost...insulting We're not crazy like that And dubbing in cartoons is brilliant, Shrek was probably better than the original: P

So let's say Benjen does in fact rescue Bran and Meera and takes them back to Castle Black. If he stays beyond the Wall, I wonder if Edd might take it upon himself to take them to Winterfell, since he knows that will be where Jon went, which would then spare him from death if (when) the Wall gets fucked. Then we will have another season of Edd. pls god pls

All hail Lord Commander Edd, the last true man of the Night's Watch!

I haven't been able to grasp this one yet in a makes-no-sense way worse than Gendry's vanishing. If Benjen came back, he would be the Lord Commander as he was a senior member of the Night's Watch and also First Ranger wasn't he?

How convenient that he comes back immediately after a certain Euron has won the Kingsmoot? And Gendry didn't vanish. His story ended.

Better disband it instead of sending good characters straight to their deaths like Edd and Benjen.

Better disband it instead of sending good characters straight to their deaths like Edd and Benjen. Edd would still be the Lord Commander. Jon gave him the LC cloak, and every brother present at Castle Black now thinks of him as Lord Commander. He may not be officially one, but he's at least an acting one. Even if Ben came back to CB, Edd would still be the Commander. He has been at the Wall longer than Ben IIRC. But I think Bran, Benjen, and Meera are going to pass through the Nightfort anyway.
