The thing is that u cannot make theories with oversights and incompetence. Well position hints and clues are fun to pick up on but we are dealing with people who forgot how many kids cersei gave birth to. I agree, but the casual GoT fan who watches week to week, who doesn't know who half the characters are and who doesn't even remember that scene probably doesn't care. And sadly, whether we like it or not, that's who the show is catered to. Sure, they throw in the references now and then, but they'll gloss over certain details and won't really bat an eyelid. D&D in hindsight are probably kicking themselves, and will likely one day admit that they screwed up with that scene, but I doubt it will effect anything going forward.

I still think it is her loss of faith. There is a hint to it in the scene. Before she takes the necklace off she is rubbing her hands in front of the fire, this symbolises that she is cold. To me that suggests that it is the first sign to her that the warmth from the Lord of Light has gone out inside of her. The removal of the necklace is the confirmation that she now needs glamours to look young, her faith alone won't work. I think this has been done intentionally for people to question why she looks old now when she didn't look old the last time it was removed. Is it the her faith or is it the potions?
I don't think we'll get an explanation outside of George doesn't say exactly how the magic works, they can't give that information away either.

From what I'm reading, most unsullied fans picked up on it fairly easily and understood what was happening so they achieved what they were after. Everyone realized Melisandre was defeated and depressed after failing Stannis and most remembered her returning to the wall that way last season. I talked to my elder son last night, he's a new fan catching up as of season 4 (and he's on book 3 now, I'm so proud of him) and he said he felt like Melisandre's "fire went out" as he put it and that she's lost her magical abilities. He asked me if she would be able to go back to her youthful look or not and I told him we're pretty sure she does since there's other photos of her and bits from the trailers that show her back to her young look. He also says he really thought she would do the kiss of life on Jon like Thoros did to Beric Dondarrion - which he definitely remembered from seasons past so he's a good example of the general audience having a fairly decent grasp on the whole situation and what Melisandre is capable of doing.

I wonder if this is why there are no young people in Asshai? Have they all discovered immortality or is it just a Mel thing?

I wonder if this is why there are no young people in Asshai? Have they all discovered immortality or is it just a Mel thing? #JustMelThings But yeah, Melisandre is kind of a rogue priestess, so maybe her powers extend beyond that of a regular R'hllor follower.

So "The Red Woman" in 6x01 was a massive reveal about Melisandre's true indentity which some fans had theorized about and GRRM had confirmed at one point in an interview. But for most show viewers it probably came as a complete shock. But we were left with no details and lots of questions. Who is she really? How does she do the glamour (is it the ruby or something else)? What does this mean going forward - is she 'giving up' and lost her faith? Give me your best theory (or theories you've read) as to who Melisandre really is and what's going on with her now!
Another interesting thing from the book I'd forgotten about: Mel never sleeps, associating sleep with death and the realm of the Great Other. I think this could show the degree to which Mel has given up on R'hllor, and by extension, life itself. I got the impression that she wouldn't mind if she never woke up again - although of course we know she will. Wonder what kind of dreams Mel has tonight?

So Mel is essentially a Vampire who feeds on R'hllor sacrifices instead of blood directly

I wonder if this is why there are no young people in Asshai? Have they all discovered immortality or is it just a Mel thing? do you mean there were once children living there but now they're all near-immortals and that's why no more (non-shadow) babies are born?
