But negative backlash had nothing to do with Doran. So if they really reacted to that they would have killed SS. Not him. I'm trying to undrstand why they chose Ellaria instead of Doran and their love for Indira Varma is the only reason I can think of. Surely killing 4 female characters (and the only female characters in Dorne) would have caused outrage.. Perhaps D&D thought that this was the safest road to take.

Ellaria has been around since season 4 and the viewers associate her with Oberyn. Doran is also physically anchored to Dorne, while Ellaria can go to different locations if they need her to. They also have different motivations. Ellaria will start war with the Lannisters while Doran will not. So if the writers want Dorne to go to war, Doran has to be out of the picture. Doran and Ellaria aren't interchangeable as characters, they have different goals. Doran never revealed a great scheme in the show.
