Season 5 is finally here!
Let's discuss Dany's arc. What do you think about the direction the show has taken with the Meereen storyline? Love it or hate it?
What do you think of Emilia's performance? Much imporoved?
Hit it!

Episode 1
I was pleasantly surprised that Dany and Meereen got so much screen time, I had not been expecting it by the information we got from the reviews. I loved the opening scene with the taking down of the Harpy statue and the the scene with White Rat, very dramatic.
Dany's conversation with Barristar was very nice, a little understated but we got some good information on mad King Aerys and Dany heard from Ser Barristan that her enemies where not lying when they called her father mad.
Then we have Dany's scene with Daario where he tells her about the pits and of course about how a dragon queen without dragons is no queen at all.
Finally, we have the scene with Dany visiting Viserion and Rhaegal. The two don't attack her but scare her off blowing fire around her to get her away from them. They are very agree at Mommy right now.

That scene with Viserion and Rhaegal made me sad.

I hate Daario and that has nothing to do with it but just saying.

It definitely set the tone for what's to come.

This is what happens when you watch the first two episodes at the same time, they blurred into one. I loathe Daario in the books, he's the worst cliche of a bad boy that there could possibly be. However, TV Daario is much more likeable maybe it's because Michael H. doesn't look like a complete douchebag.

I loved the scenes in Meereen I loved the scenes with Daario and the dragons the most. The Daario scenes served to humanise Dany in a way that the show hasn't done since season 1, i.e. show her as something other than a badass queen with dragons. It was good to see, and on a more shallow note, I loved her hair in that scene. It looks so good down like that, and very reminiscent of season 1. I expect we'll see it again in future (i.e. more pillow talk!) because I doubt they'd have made a new wig for just one scene lol. And I agree about the dragons. The spoilers claiming that they attacked her irritated me a little because they would never do that. And indeed, they didn't. They were just angry teenagers trying to get their mother out of their room. Lmao, maybe they had a dragon porn stash in the corner that they didn't want her to see.

What are you doing? Get out! Rhaegal: "Hide the stash, hide it, before she sees it" Going back tot he show, I think you hit the nail in the head when you mention that Dany has once again been humanized. Since season 3 she has been Drecarys Badass Queen(TM) and there's been very little humanity/down to earth scenes with her. She's just being "awesome" all the time but that's not why we love her. We love her (or at least I do) because she's a very human characters, with many flaws. Although, I don't agree with Daario's conclusion that the pits should be open based on his experience, it is his experience and he gave her a frank anecdote of how he sees the world which allowed Dany to see that no everything is black and white. Her costumes and hair look killer this season. I love all the white they have her in and I'm wondering why they changed her outfit styling from blue to white...

Just to compare Chapters vs. Episodes for Dany so far. It pretty much comes to show that her material has been dragged out since Season 2. But I think Season 5 will be closer in moving the story forward as Season 1 did. A Game of Thrones Chapter 3: Daenerys I - Season 1: Episode 1 Chapter 11: Daenerys II - Season 1: Episode 1 Chapter 23: Daenerys III - Season 1: Episode 2, 3 Chapter 36: Daenerys IV - Season 1: Episode 4 Chapter 46: Daenerys V - Season 1: Episode 6 Chapter 54: Daenerys VI - Season 1: Episode 7 Chapter 61: Daenerys VII - Season 1: Episode 8 Chapter 64: Daenerys VIII - Season 1: Episode 9 Chapter 68: Daenerys IX - Season 1: Episode 10 Chapter 72: Daenerys X - Season 1: Episode 10 A Clash of Kings Chapter 12: Daenerys I - Season 2: Episode 1, 2, 4 Chapter 27: Daenerys II - Season 2: Episode 4, 5 Chapter 40: Daenerys III - Season 2: Episode 6, 7, 8 Chapter 48: Daenerys IV - Season 2: Episode 10 Chapter 63: Daenerys V - Season 3: Episode 1 A Storm of Swords Chapter 8: Daenerys I - Season 3: Episode 1 Chapter 23: Daenerys II - Season 3: Episode 1, 3 Chapter 27: Daenerys III - Season 3: Episode 3, 4 Chapter 42: Daenerys IV - Season 3: Episode 5, 7 - 10 Chapter 57: Daenerys V - Season 4: Episode 1, 3, 4 Chapter 71: Daenerys VI - Season 4: Episode 5, 8; Season 5: Episode 1 A Dance with Dragons Chapter 2: Daenerys I - Season 4: Episode 6, 7, 10; Season 5: Episode 1 Chapter 11: Daenerys II - Season 4: Episode 10; Season 5: Episode 1 Chapter 16: Daenerys III - Season 4: Episode 5 Chapter 23: Daenerys IV - Season 5: Episode 1 Chapter 36: Daenerys VI - Season 4: Episode 7; Season 5: Episode 1

Loved all the Dany scenes in the first episode. Meereen was the highlight of this one for me. I agree about the Dany/Daario scene being a nice change of pace from constant queen mode. I love when they make her look more human give her little intimate scenes. We know she can pull off the big Valyrian speechs and be a badass, it's the smaller scenes she's struggled with in the past. I thought she was great on this one though. And I thought it couldn't get much sadder than the scene where she locked the dragons up, but damn if that scene of them being super pissed at her wasn't some heartbreaking shit.

I loved all the Meereen scenes so far but then I love all Dany scenes It is much more interesting than last season I will say that. I only wish we didn't see Drgon until Daznak. With regards to styling, hating her hair and outfits this season. Those curls...... Daario is awesome this season and I would like to see more of their relationship developing. I cannot wait to see what sort of interactions she will have with Tyrion and what kind of emotions she displays when she meets Jorah again.

And lbr, no matter who played Dany, the haters would be claiming she is a bad actress only because they hate Dany.

She just has been very inconsistent in Game of Thrones. She was bad in S2 and S4 IMO, but the problem might be in the writing as well. Outstanding in S1 and decent in S3. This episode looked extremely promising for her.

Oh, Dormer's not performing?

However, for scenes that had better material both in season 2 and 4 Emilia performed quite well. I'm thinking of the HOTU scene and the scene when she took Meereen.

I know she'll appear in Terminator but I'm not sure that's a good measure as the writing probably won't be that great but still. She is filming Me Before You, that should be a good gauge.

Emilia shouldn't have had so much screen time in the first place. Season 2 & 4 were the most boring ones for her arch as well.
