The article says later on that he knows which of the main characters are alive in the end, so maybe this specified character isn't one of the main ones?

The article says later on that he knows which of the main characters are alive in the end, so maybe this specified character isn't one of the main ones? He may know which of the main characters he plans to keep alive, but he may not necessarily know the manner of the deaths of those unlucky ones. Although I am inclined to agree that it won't be one of the main ones (and I consider the original POVs to be the "main" characters more than anyone else), and phrasing like "since their introduction" makes me think that perhaps they were not introduced in AGOT. But who knows, maybe something was lost in translation. |

Yeah, translation from English into German into English again might have altered some of the expressions, but the German arcticle clearly says, that he knows which main characters are alive in the end. Also this Klaus Störtebecker speculation in the comments is kinda far fetched. "Vielleicht lag es an Hamburg, keine Ahnung."
Maybe it is because of Hamburg. I don't know. That doesn't sound like he has drawn actual inspiration from Hamburg's history. |

Doubt is any of the really big characters. Maybe it's Brienne, or Myrcella, Arianne or one of the Sand Snakes is a possibility too. After GRRM read Arianne III from TWOW some people thought there was some foreshadowing of Elia Sand dying, maybe it's her.

What if it's Stannis? He certainly feels like a doomed character. His downfall(death?) on the show seemed so rushed, that maybe George didn't even know what the hell to do with the character in tWOW, just that he was to die, and D&D had to come up with how all on their own. Maybe George finally has it figured out and even, gulp, is taken inspiration from the show.

I did think of Stannis once I saw it wasn't necessarily a female character. He has reeked of "doomed" since the ACOK prologue to me and, honestly, I'm surprised he's lasted as long as he has.

I think this one is Arya. She has an obsession with death, and now shes given her life to the many faced god, she has no way out of that deal. What happens if she realises she wants to go home?
Yeah, I feel like shes doomed.

Stannis was my first thought, but like Fire and Blood said, George has never been subtle about foreshadowing Stannis' death. I think this one is Arya. She has an obsession with death, and now shes given her life to the many faced god, she has no way out of that deal. What happens if she realises she wants to go home? Yeah, I feel like shes doomed. It's not like she swore a vow to the Night's Watch. What's forcing her to stay with the House of Black and White forever? I always viewed her 'training' with them as a stepping stone and nothing more - not her endgame. She, like all of the 'kids' in the story is growing up and learning her way in the world. She's making mistakes and learning how to recover and do better from it. I honestly don't see her staying there as a Faceless Man forever and never have, from the first reading of the books I had a strong feeling she was just there to learn some things and leave, like college! Arya is an endgame character and one of George's favorites - he's listed her as a special favorite in interviews before. I doubt she dies before the end. She's not a major player, won't be Queen or anything like that - but she has a lot to do as more of a side enabler - a Littlefinger of sorts but in female assassin form. |

Arya isn't bound to the House of Black and White, though. I'm pretty sure she's still in the "you can leave if you want" stage, since she's still essentially an apprentice. |

The only other option I can see is her drifting back to Westeros and I dont really know what she would do after that... |

I think all the main characters (original POV) are safe until the last book. My first guess would be Stannis, other possibilities might be Brienne, Jaime, Cersei, Arianne, Aegon, Jon Con, among others. He really needs to start trimming down characters, and setting up the endgame.
