Kind of suprised how negative the reactions have been tbh. The season definitely stumbled out of the gate, but I thought most of the second half was pretty good. Thought the finale was decent overall, I actually cared when Ray and Frank died so I'd say it was a success in that aspect.
I'd give the season 7/10.

It worked for me and kept me interested in the mystery for its eight weeks. And I thought it all wrapped up more interestingly than it did last year (s1 had a stronger beginning and and s2 a stronger ending IMO). Some of the dialogue was stilted and portentous but I found that to be the case almost as often last year too. I found the characters as interesting though and the payoff to it all more enjoyable. I guess it's that it was more confusing and that the setup for it all wasn't as well-done? I dunno. Maybe I'm out of touch with the circlejerking zeitgeist these days.
As for the critics, I feel there's some sourness being thrown at NP for a number of different reasons. He rubs them the wrong way, I guess. It's hard to find reviews that don't refer negatively to his character, it seems. Which isn't to say that this makes their takes on the season less legitimate or something. But I've sure noticed a lot of it.

I think Burris will get buried eventually. Hes loving the 5 million he found in Rays Car no doubt, but soon with Ani revealing everything to the LA times, hell go down. Well just never see it.

Yeah probably. I just wanted there to be a "where are they now" title at the end of the credits that said, "Oh yeah, and Burris died of a horrible blood disease" or something like that to hold me over. But yeah, he's probably fucked. Just offscreen fucked.

I didnt really like it. I was never as harsh on this season as most of the detractors but that ending didn't work for me and definitely didn't justify the mediocrity of most of the season.

I saw people complaining Frank died stupidly because he didn't want to give up his suit! No it was about not backing down. And the diamonds in his pocket that his wife probably never got. His part in the finale was great. Burris getting away felt real. The good guys don't always win. I feel like he'll go down but we won't see it. The finale made me sad. I guess that's what it was supposed to do? As I said the baby thing was a little cliché but whatever. I'd have to watch it over again for full judgment. It wasn't perfect or as good as season 1 but for people to say it was the worst show (or season I guess) they've ever seen??? No way.

I have to say, I'm pretty fucking annoyed with how some critics have reviewed the finale and have overviewed the whole season. Yes, it was weaker overall than s1 and had some shitty lines throughout but so many critics seem like they really weren't paying attention. It's like they didn't try to keep up. I'm not saying they all ought to have rewatched and checked in on the subreddit or anything but when people who are supposed to know TV for a living watch something and blame the show for the fact that they don't know it's characters, I have to call bullshit. Some of the people that they claim not to know like Burris, Holloway and Nails were in every fucking episode! How can they pretend they don't know who they are again and again? And some of the nitpicks that they're passing off as being serious flaws are pissing me off too. If they'd applied any of this intense scrutiny to s1 or too most other shows, they'd come up with quite a bit to deride too.
Another goofy thing I've noticed is reviews complaining that NP had Frank and Ray die because people complained about Rust not dying last year. So are they saying they wanted s2 to be a formulaic retread of s1? Or what? How about they're different characters with vastly different arcs than Rust's who's flaws and mistakes led them to die? Why does it all have to be some meta thing where we immediately delve into the writer's motives instead of looking at the work itself. Ugh.
Also this business of saying "it's too depressing", which I also heard after the s5 GoT finale...that REALLY irks me. What world do they think we live in? Do they read the news and see a bunch of happy shit going on in the world? Do they think we're moving forward into a blissful peaceful period of love and prosperity? Because I don't see that anywhere and most art that points in that direction is either selective in its observations of what's going on or dishonest. TD s2's ending was happy as it could've been. Like GrrM's proposed ending. "Bittersweet". Which is the happiest an honest ending can really give you IMHO.
Sorry for the rant and the half-assed overthinking btw. Am drinking.

I just saw on the TD subreddit that 1996 Vince Vaughn looks quite a bit like Mr. Kitsch. Thought I'd share the photo.

No, Amen to ALL of this. The ones nitpicking and saying it was confusing were just being lazy about it. Yes, there was a bit more going on than S1, but if you can focus on that intense story, you can focus on this one. It annoyed me that so many critics were shitting on it. Like the guy that writes the recaps on Entertainment Weekly. He was hate watching. If you're a giant site like EW, at least get someone who likes the show to read the recaps, it was so offputting. Plus, what did they expect? Nothing was going to be as good as S1, it still doesn't mean S2 sucked. It didn't. It was still better than half the other dramas on TV.

Hell yes, Season two is one of the most underrated shows of recent memory. It took a daring approach of expanding the theme of Urban decay with a different style of storytelling.

True Detective is about the existential dread caused by a society driven by greed which allows the powerful to prey on the vulnerable, suck a community dry and move on with impunity, leaving a small town to slowly deteriorate. The people stuck in the cesspool lose their moral compass in effort to survive in that world, and the main journey of both seasons is search for redemption.
It amazes me that so many people shit on season two for being different, even though it expands upon the themes of season one in fresh and compelling ways.

Fuck yeh true detective is back!
Season 1 was some of the best television i've seen, season 2 had it moments but didn't quite meet the mark for me.

I thought season 2 had a lot of potential and the performances were great. And I see where they were going with it, but the threads just didn't tie together at the end. I will be watching season 3 though!

If you watch season 1 and 2 back-to-back you see how similar they are thematically. Neither season is plot-driven, they both revolve around the redemption arcs of the main characters, and the setting is an important backdrop representing moral decay. The aerial shots of interstates in season two with cars pumping through them like blood vessels in the veins of Vinci. Vinci is a character and all of the supporting characters show how corruption is the natural order of urban life.

I agree the filming, themes and acting was spectacular in moments of season 2 and it's by no means a bad series of television. I think the writing just didn't get me there or how the story played out. Must say haven't seen it since it came out but i remember being a bit disappointed at the end. The first season had the relationship between woody harrelson and matthew mcconaughey and that magic screen chemistry can't be replicated easily imo. I think the investigation was a little more interesting to me in the first season as well.
