Dark Souls Remastered has been announced for Nintendo Switch. Soon you'll be able to play Dark Souls on the toilet.

I played the PS4 Dissidia beta for a little bit ... and I'm not sure I like it. First of all, I really dislike the 3 vs. 3 battle system. It turns every single battle into pure chaos. Like, most of the time, I have no idea what's going on and who's winning. The UI too is a cluttered nightmare with a million different bars and numbers. These kinds of team battles are immersion breaking as well. I love how in the original game, you could have these really intimate one on one battles between iconic Final Fantasy heroes and villains. That was really fun. In this version of Dissidia, your party always consists of a bunch of random characters across all the games... and it feels random and weird and wrong. I don't like it. Imagine a Game of Thrones brawler where one team consists of Catelyn, Oberyn and the Night's King, and the other of Ned Stark, Viserys Targaryen and Stannis Baratheon. That's how this feels, it just doesn't make any fucking sense ... and I don't like it. As someone who really loved the gameplay of the PSP Dissidia games, to me this version somehow feels both more complicated and drastically simplified at the same time. In the previous games, in order for an attack to land, it required some very specific timing and positioning, especially on higher difficulty. If you were to just mindlessly spam attacks, the enemy would dodge or deflect them all. In this version however, spamming attacks is a totally viable option, and because of all the chaos on screen, that's what you'll be doing most of the time anyway, because it's virtually impossible to keep track of what the fuck is going on. I also don't like that most battles take place on the ground. In the previous games, the characters could basically fly ... well, not really, but they could jump infinitely without landing, and most attack and dodge animations would launch them up, so most battles ended up taking place in the air, which was just super cool. It felt almost like a dance, it was a really cool battle system. This new Dissidia doesn't feel like that at all, the character movements are stiff and slow. I'm sad.

What I do like however is the graphics. Especially the arenas are absolutely gorgeous. One level is called Outskirts of Narshe, it's a snowy mountain area and in the distance, you can see the town Narshe, like in the intro sequence of Final Fantasy VI. And I'm just sitting there, Terra's Theme playing in my head, like this ... But then, halfway through the battle, the snow disappears, the sky turns red, the earth becomes scorched and barren ... bam, you're in the World of Ruin. Goosebumps.

Oh man, the Alexandria level made me fanboy so hard. I don't care about the fighting honestly, I just want to look at the levels. My heart skipped a beat when Alexander showed up to protect the castle. And it is SO fitting that the other team summoned Bahamut right in that moment. Just like in the game. Perfect. The legendary eidolon, Alexander ... your powers even transcend Bahamut. So you wish to defend the castle with your brilliant wings?
I just wish there was a way to spin the camera around freely. I want to take it all in, but the camera is always locked in on another character.

I hope they update the gameplay of Dark Souls 1 a little bit, otherwise I don't think I'll be getting the remastered version. It's really hard to go back and enjoy the gameplay of Dark Souls 1 nowadays, especially after having played Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 for so long. The controls and the animations are so stiff and slow.

Really hope we get a remastered version of Dissidia Duodecim at some point down the line, because I absolutely love the concept behind Dissidia, but I really ain't feeling this new version. In theory, the 3 vs 3 battles are a pretty neat idea - if they were a seperate game mode, not the main attraction of the game. The combat system in its core is geared towards party battles, so even though one on one battles are possible, their inclusion is pointless as they don't really work. Six superhuman characters fighting in a relatively small arena creates so much chaos on screen, you have no idea most of the time what the fuck is going on (which is the reason why the user interface is so damn cluttered by the way, it has to be in order for you to know what's happening). And who thought it would be a good idea to take away camera control? This makes it nearly impossible to dodge attacks from behind. If you're attacked by two characters at once, there isn't much you can do about it, you're basically screwed. Another big gripe of mine is the lack of vertical movement, that was one of the things I loved the most about the original Dissidia on PSP. They'll be releasing more characters for the beta over the next few days. I still need to see how playing as Ultimecia feels like (who was by far my favourite character to play as in the PSP version). But so far, I don't think I'll be getting this one on release, I don't see myself playing it a lot. And that's a real bummer, because I've been looking forward to this game for years.

Yay, they've released Ultimecia for the Dissidia beta, and she plays ... pretty good. Differently from the PSP version, and it will take me some time to get used to all her new moves, but also kind of familiar. Here a video of the chaos. This was on the highest difficulty and of course my two AI party members were absolutely worthless. Also, I love, LOVE, Squall's alternative outfits, omg ...

I've never played a Dissidia game. When it comes to fighting games I like Soul Calibur or Guilty Gear.

Playing as Ultimecia is weird. You are either the MVP, or you end up as cannon fodder, there is no middle ground. It all depends on the characters that you fight against. Since all of Ultimecia's attacks are magical projectiles, if you allow a sword fighter to come anywhere near you (or if you get attacked from behind, which unfortunately happens all the time because of the way the battles are structured) you're basically screwed, as you don't really have the means to defend yourself or to recover. But if you are lucky enough to fight another mage like Kuja or Terra without getting interrupted, it's actually super fun. I also just fought three different Lightnings from FFXIII at once (I will have nightmares about this), and I could barely do anything.

Okay, so my biggest pet peeve inquisition is the conversations where the dialogue tree just pops up while you still have full character control, as oppose to locking you into a scene or conversation. They are infuriating. One errant click of the mouse and you swing your sword exiting the entire conversation meaning you need to go through the whole thing again, and there is no skip option. And you have to click because the number keys normally used for dialogue are also linked to your abilities. It's especially infuriating because for some reason they decided to make a really important conversation in the game have this feature, which also means I have to stand there listening to the same dialogue over and over with no option to skip, and make precise clicks, hoping that I don't accidentally fuck the whole thing up

Normally it's not a big deal though, you can still engage the other person without having to start the conversation over. As long as they're still talking, just walk up to them and press the interaction button again. There actually is a skip option. On PS4 it's the circle button, I don't know which one it is on PC. Pressing it once or multiple times will skip individual lines, holding it down will exit the conversation altogether. That's a pretty convenient way to quickly go through all the NPC exposition dumps on repeat playthroughs.
