I absolutely hate the idea of Oprah running for President for all of the reasons listed already. But if it did come down to that (an if I was American, obviously) I’d vote Oprah without hesitation. Not voting might be ideologically sound but if it’s leads to four more years of Trump? Nope, no way. At least Oprah is likely to surround herself with competent or semi-competent advisors, and isn’t a total moron herself.

I hope(and believe) that democrats are smart enough to not let Oprah get past the primaries. The reason Trump scurried his way to the nomination is because of an extremely crowded field(16 other challengers) split the vote among establishment Republicans. The one thing last year taught us is that experienced politicians should be leading the country, not celebrities. If Oprah wants to run for Senate and work her way up after a few years of experience, that'd be one thing. Franken proved himself to be a pretty savvy politician, but to go from celebrity straight to the White House is just absurd, and I don't think dems will make the same mistake republicans did.

And part of the problem was the media focusing on Trump instead of sane candidates like Kasich. Honestly I'm skeptical that Oprah will even want to run, I think the media is running with Oprah's speech to get a deja vu from that sweet Trump publicity.

Maybe it's my cynical attitude toward celebrities in general, but I feel like it's such an industry of self promotion that I could see any celebrity surrounding themselves with sycophants for the mere gratification. That said, I doubt Oprah, going off her track record could be anywhere as bad as Trump, but in an election of celebrity vs celebrity I wouldn't even vote. It's an insult to the idea of intelligent discourse on any level as far as I'm concerned. Besides, if the past year has taught people anything, it should that celebrities are not infallible. The ideolisation and worship of real human beings is nosense. And quite frankly the outpour of people on twitter going "I'd vote for Oprah" purely because she was nice on telly is just depressing.

I'd vote Oprah over Trump any day, but it won't come to that.

I agree that Oprah as President is a stupid and nauseating idea because if what it signifies about society (tbf to Oprah, I don't know that she has even said she would consider running herself). But not voting in that case just doesn't sit right with me. By all means vote against her in the Primary (or abstain if the other candidates are also shit) but not voting in the actual presidential election...it's going to lead to 4 more years of Trump. And that doesn't sit right with me at all. Voting for the better of two bad options is always preferable to me. But then I know Davey Joe and I think others objected to this at the 2016 election so I don't see the need to relitigate it

In other news, Tim Farron regrets saying that he does not think gay sex is sinful: www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jan/10/tim-farron-regrets-saying-gay-sex-not-sin?CMP=fb_guThe line at the end about a glass ceiling for Christians in politics irritates me to no end. Fuck off with that, this is a secular society and religion has no place interfering with your political decisions. I don't need some sanctimonious shit telling me I'm living in sin and will be condemned to the eternal fires of hell for a bit of dick

But then I know Davey Joe and I think others objected to this at the 2016 election so I don't see the need to relitigate it I will vote against Trump for sure. Typically I don't believe in voting for somebody you don't really believe in because it encourages further mediocrity. Since the 70s the democratic party has shifted significantly right and they don't really support progressive ideals anymore. Clinton's platform would essentially be called Republican in the 80s. Republicans tend to vote down party lines while Democrats only vote when they're passionate about a candidate, like Obama. The Democratic party really needs to get its head out of its ass and promote progressive candidates. I also think that Congress is in many ways more important than the president, and they're the reason we're stuck in this predicament. Any sane Congress would have moved to impeach Trump all ready. Midterms might just be more important for the nation than 2020. I really didn't like Clinton, she never publicly supported gay marriage until after the Supreme Court made it legal, then lied about it like we're too stupid to watch old clips on youtube. I knew Maryland would go blue as it always does so I did a write in. I think Trump is a very real threat to our democracy so I'll vote for whoever I can to get him out of office, but if it's a Trump vs. Oprah campaign it just might be my last election in America.

I'd feel uncomfortable really supporting Oprah since I've spent like three years calling Trump an unqualified reality star.

Supposedly they are saying that the White House was actually happy about those comments because it would play well with his base. I just want to throw up and I don't know how anyone could support those comments. And honestly, if I lived in Norway, there is no FUCKING way I'd want to come to the shithole that is America. *someday the government is going to take me away and kill me for my anti-American sentiment. Oh well.

Also love the defense of the comments from people like Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage. Trump can say ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING about any and every country in the world - including insulting our Prime Minister and the Mayor of London - but the very second anyone from the UK says something as simple as "that's bad - don't say that", it's THEM who are hurting the "special relationship". Suuuuure.

Trump bemoaning minorities while openly asking for more people who are stereotypically blond haired and blue-eyed and white. Le sigh.
More seriously though, lol at the idea of a far right government in America advocating for Scandinavian immigrants when Scandanavia is one of the more left leaning regions of, well, anywhere
