The amount of shade being thrown at these Russian swimmers that got reinstated despite failing drug tests is kind of hilarious.

Now he's using our couches as uneven bars...maybe I should stick him in gymnastics lol. Do it, it's fun! Though he doesn't get to do A bars, he only gets high bar and rings Young Amy Tinkler made floor finals, which is awesome. She is the one who lives near me that I met before at her gym club Edit: Phelps won his 19th Olympic medal. Wow

I was so annoyed that gymnastics and swimming were on midnight to 3am my time Russia should not even be allowed to participate this year. All of their paraolympians were disqualified from the Para-Olympics.

My son is watching Aliya Mustafina do her floor exercise and just told me he's going to marry her lol. Your son has good taste. She is so beautiful, and the Russians are the only ones who still make the floor routine look like a dance. She almost never smiles, though. Actually, the entire Russian gymnastics team is beautiful.

Because I'm a bit of a geek with this... There is actually a bit of a divide among those who enjoy the gymnastics, over the choreography in the women's routines. One side favours what would probably be referred to as "traditional" choreography, all floaty, graceful, ballet-like dancing. Team Russia is one of the teams that still seems to use this style of choreography. But then you have this newer wave of gymnasts, the likes of Simone Biles, Claudia Fragapne and so on, who use more quirky, dramatic dance, more powerful than strictly graceful. And there are those who favour the traditional approach, saying these new routines aren't so good because the dancing is different. Personally, I think both styles are good, and it's up to the gymnast to choose which one suits them best. If you have a quirky personality, then it makes sense to match your dance to that. Like, Claudia Fragapane (I use her as an example so much because I've seen more of her compete than any others) is a small little bundle of energy, I don't think it would look right her trying to shoehorn in these floaty ballet-like dances. But maybe that's just me. /geekoff

I preferred Nastia who was powerful, but not nearly as powerful as Shawn, and more traditionally artistic. I do prefer the traditional ballet dance style that turns into tumbling over the tumbling-heavy routines that appear to have little dance flourishes thrown in just 'cause. I still haven't seen Claudia! I need to get on that. I recorded the gymnastics from last night, so I'll probably watch that later. When it comes to quirky dancing in routines, I think the American who does it best is Hernandez. I'm disappointed that she's not competing in the all-around.

Like I say,in think both styles have their place, and it all comes down to the individual gymnast. As for Claudia, I think she sadly didn't make the floor finals this year (but then, neither did Gabby Douglas?! Stupid rule of 2 or something). Here is her routine (not from yesterday, I can't find that one): And this is Amy Tinkler, who did make it to the floor finals. She is the young woman from a local club (I didn't see her qualifying routine, BBC didn't broadcast hers, so this is a different one): I guess her style is a bit more floaty

I prefer Claudia over Amy there, because she does connect the elements. It flows. With many gymnasts, including Simone Biles--who I still do adore--the dancing parts seem like something they just have to do because those elements are required, and you can see on their faces that they can't wait to get through that part because their minds are already on the next tumbling pass. I most enjoy the routines where the gymnasts appear to be lost in the dance, because then the tumbling looks like it's an extension of the dancing. What's your favorite apparatus? I love floor, but I think my favorite is uneven bars. Por ejemplo, speaking of Nastia.

Men's vault is always really good (except that leg break ) because there is so much raw power there, and women's beam always looks really impressive. Parallel bars is my least favourite to watch Floor and vault were my favourite when I trained (we didn't have fancy sprung floors and table vaults, we trained on judo mats and a box vault. But we got by) though.

@witchy, I just read that the French man looks like he will recover fine, he is able to stand on his own already, which is pretty remarkable. He is also adamant he will compete at Tokyo

I'm shocked. I never trained for competition, and I was never very good at gymnastics, but I loved taking classes every chance I got. They had the bouncy floors at the University of Kentucky where I was an undergrad, and I took gymnastics conditioning a few times just to get to flip on that floor.

Basil, did you watch men's diving? Their trunks are so ridiculous. They can't even really be called trunks. Their penis bands are so ridiculous.

Synchronized diving is so cool, IMO. Those British dudes were so happy when they got on the podium too.
