Fuck me but Gillian Anderson was phenomenal this week. I mean the entire police station sequence (which was the majority of the episode) was brilliant but Anderson stood out with her great performance. The North Korea bit was where she really shone. actually the North Korea stuff was spooky, considering this was shot sometime in 2015/16 and the recent ramping up of tensions with NK. But unicorns and a new Valhalla, ain't it swell?! (This is now my interpretation of the inner workings of Trump's mind. Missiles and genocide overplayed by rainbows and unicorns and Marilyn Monroe)

Have just watched the Laura episode "Git Gone". Really well done and an interesting direction on Laura's character.
It took me all episode to realize that Dane Cook was Robbie, I kept thinking that has to be Dane Cook...
Hopefully I will be all caught up by the end of the week!!!

It took me all episode to realize that Dane Cook was Robbie, I kept thinking that has to be Dane Cook... Hopefully I will be all caught up by the end of the week!!! Oh you haven't seen Bowie yet Git Gone was really good, I loved Laura's transition from the "living dead" (I.e. Totally dissatisfaction with life, never truly happy, always wants something more) to the actual dead. And her facing off with Anubis was awesome. And Audrey too, those scenes were brilliant. Probably my favourite episode so far. Actually Laura's scenes in the two episodes following Git Gone have been highlights for me too. You'll understand when you watch, but I love the direction they chose to go with her (and this is info Gaiman gave to Fuller and Green, according to various interviews). This week was really good. Coming to America, as ever, was wonderfully done. Vulcan was a really cool addition. There's nothing like him in the novel but he makes total sense, especially as a follow-on from the stuff Media spoke about last week. And there was some really pointed dialogue. Very relevant in this Trump-era: there isn't just one version of America. Everyone has there own, and will fight to defend that vision (the actual quote is much better of course). Only two episodes left I've loved this season so far. Think next week we get Easter, which, yay! Also looks like we are going to get some Mad Sweeny background.

Wow! Interesting Emmy news here. Starz are really going all in and counting on American Gods for an Emmy win. 16 performers submitted on the Emmy ballot: www.goldderby.com/article/2017/american-gods-starz-2017-emmys-ricky-whittle-ian-mcshane-news/Obviously a lot of submissions doesn't translate to a lot of nominations. But very strong contenders there in every category. If I had to choose one for each category I'd say: Lead actor: McShane (I love you Ricky, but McShane is phenomenal) Supporting Actor: Pablo Schrieber (though for outside the episode stuff Bruce Langley is awesome. Like he is literally technical boy. Seriously watch his interviews) Supporting Actress: Emily Browning (So hard to pick because I love Yetide so much) Guest Actress: Gillian Anderson (again, so difficult because they are all so great, but Marilyn and Bowie sold it for me) Guest Actor: Orlando Jones (the slave uprising gave me chills) I honestly think they have a good chance. Although I'm looking back at all the shows doing Emmy campaigns at the minute and it's crazy how good TV was this year. Comedy, Drama, Miniseries...everything was so good

Comedy, Drama, Miniseries...everything was so good Having two episodes to catch up...my picks might be a little dated...but I will address yours until I catch up (and I LOVE MY EMMY SPECULATION...even more then the show itself) American Gods, has a good chance for a nomination especially with Game of Thrones, Outlander and Orphan Black out of contention. Starz is going all in for this one. I don't know if The Handmaid's Tale is one season or not, but that might be in the stiff competition category of best miniseries...so it could here or there. Big Little Lies is the same deal, rumor has it they might do a season 2 but I've heard nothing official from HBO about that...so I will just assume both shows are miniseries. AG is going to face off with the likes of This Is Us, which is probably the buzziest new show of the season, The Crown (Netflix will be all in on this one), Better Call Saul, Westworld (HBO will be all in for this one), perhaps The Leftovers?, The Americans, maybe the Affair. Lead Actor: Hands down Mc Shane. Ricky is good as Shadow but Mc Shane is on a another level and Mc Shane would have better shot of winning this category, since I will still say that probably John Lithgow has supporting actor on lock still. Supporting Actor: Pablo Schrieber...I'm always impressed with his work, from Pornstache, 13 Hours and now this show. I still think Lithgow wins the category but Schrieber deserves a nod. Supporting Actress: I think Emily has a better chance then Yetide, though both ladies are good...Emily was terrific in Git Gone...that alone should seal a nod for her. Guest Actress: Both Gillian and Cloris are great choices. I think they both could easily be nominated here. Cloris is a TV legend, no way they don't nominate her. And Gillian doing a variety of performances, she's an easy nod too. Guest Actor: Yes, Orlando Jones...the slave uprising scene should seal the deal for him. I have to say Git Gone really did a good job of showing Laura's transformation from Living Dead to Actual Dead. She actually might find more "life" after death then she did when she was alive. Betty Gilpin is also a hoot as Audrey!

I've heard lots about This Is Us but I don't even think it aired over here. If it did I missed it. Shame, everything I heard was good. Strangely I've been looking at what FYC events have been hosted and haven't seen anything from the Crown yet. Surely thy aren't going to step back after their Globes wins? We're pretty much agreed on nominations. I don't expect them to get something in every category, but it's fun to speculate. I think this will be sufficient to see Starz break into the Emmys though. And that not even counting any technical awards, which they are surely going to get something for. Slightly over a month until nominations are announced. Exciting stuff (I also have lots to say on Comedy categories too, having watched a few more series, but I'll save that for the awards thread).

Well, here is the wonderful thing about Game of Thrones...it opened voters minds to the sci-fi/fantasy genre in the Emmys. American Gods has such a good chance thanks to GoT breaking through basically in it's first season (and usually Emmys have a year lag to catch up with something). Another show I forgot is Stranger Things, which I expect to contend this year.
Like you said, everyone might not get nominated from AG and sometimes throwing up so many people in the same category can work against you. HBO learned this from GoT, when they would submit several people in the supporting categories and they pared it down.
And also, this has been a terrific year for TV. So I won't be the one bitching about Emmy snubs when it's just like, there is so much good out there and you just cannot nominate them all. AG breaking through the Emmys in a big way would be a boon to Starz. I know they hoped that for Outlander, which did earn a few Emmy nods but has not broken through in best show or the acting categories yet.
Forgot to add: sucks that This Is Us has not aired in the UK yet. It's good show. It sucks you in...I was not too sure about it after the pilot but by the 4th episode, I was sucked in. They need to work on plots for Kate and Kevin, outside of Kate's weight and Kevin's romantic life...but hopefully those two characters will be better developed in the next season.

stoneheartsrevenge, I have watched the Bowie episode! Still have to watch last week's episode and will miss tonight's as well Gillian did such a good job doing both Bowie and Marilyn and knocking out technology's front two teeth was amazing. I absolutely LOVE Crispin Glover as Mr. World (an aside, after the episodes on demand Bryan Fuller and another guy go into some aspect of the episode and they talk about casting Crispin that they based Mr. World off of him and met him for breakfast. The way he walked into the restaurant is the way Mr. World enters the scene...LOL). Teaming Mad Sweeney and Laura is such a good idea. They go into that after the episode and basically said it was fun to write and they wanted to know what it would be like to get two self centered a-holes together. I love how he calls Laura "Dead Wife". The whole police station was creepy, I remember that scene from the book and that came across more creepier on screen versus page. Shadow being all NOPE to Laura was surprising and very real for him. Really liked that scene. I hope Audrey comes back.

Yes, I watch the after the episode stuff, interesting what they said about Glover but it totally works. And I think you could realistically pass off the twist in the book, assuming you don't just say well Loki is the Trickster God, he shapeshifts, so two different actors Tonights episode looks like it will include Essie...I can't wait!

Ok I know I say I love the episode every week but A Prayer for Mad Sweeny was and hour of total perfection. Emily Browning was stunning as Laura and Essie (definitely a strong Emmy contender there! See what Yetide delivers next week but damn, Emily was brilliant) The Coming to America story was blended seamlessly with the episode's current day narrative, Ibis and Jaquel were awesome and Pablo Schreiber got to really showcase his talents too. Oh and the music! So. Much. Brilliance! And the costumes were gorgeous... way too much to praise about this episode. The finale will be hard pushed to be better than this...although the promo is very promising. Also picked up a spoiler for season 2 on the twitter-verse because yes I'm sad and read the cast's live tweets even though I dont use Twitter myself. But seriously, if you ever feel down I urge you to read their live tweets because it's so positive and supportive and friendly. Anyway, as to the season 2 spoiler Bilquis' Fate will be different than in the books. She will be in season 2 and according to Fuller she will "get her Queen on"

She did a fantastic job as Laura and Essie. Yes, The Coming to America story blended seamlessly with the episode and how Mad Sweeney got to America through Essie. I think my favorite scene was when Mad Sweeney comes for Essie at the end of her life. Such a tender scene and Pablo rocked it. You are right, the costumes and music were fabulous. Very happy we will see more of Bilquis!

Very happy we will see more of Bilquis! I have Runaround Sue stuck in my head now. Apparently the scene where Mad Sweeny comes for Essie at the end of her life is an homage to a Twilight Zone episode. Not something i've ever watched but was reading some stuff on the twitterverse from Fuller. But yeah, beautifully tender. All the stuff of "I've done you wrong too" was touching. I also liked the decision to have Mad Sweeny be Wednesday's tool in killing Laura. My memory of the books is that its implied Loki and Wednesday were involved in Laura's death, but having Sweeny do it in the show works so well with the dynamic between them. And I loved the him returning the coin to her...and hw promptly punching him Emily Browning was just so good, and so was Pornstache. Great to see him in a more vulnerable scene instead of asshole mode. Edit: Lol! I was watching a SAG-aftra Q&A with the cast and Ian McShane, that beloved man, called Theresa May "that bitch lady" who has "turned more times than a Lexus." he has absolutely no filter. Also he is a fan of Legion. Awesome!

I neglected to mention about Wednesday and Sweeney's collusion in Laura's death. Be curious to find out what Shadow and Laura will do if they ever find out Wednesday and Sweeney's involvement (Did Shadow ever find that out in the book? I can't remember.) Yes, returning the coin to her was a great scene and her punching him afterwards was perfect for their dynamic. I did not know the end scene with Sweeney and Old Essie was a homage to Twilight Zone (I missed that episode)...but a nice little homage...it was perfect ending to that. Ian Mc Shane is a treasure and I love his lack of a filter!

Solid finale. I liked the focus on Queens this episode - Bilquis, Easter, Media, and Laura too in her own way. I especially loved the unabashed feminism in this episode. Shows often keep things subtle in that department but personally i love when they just go full on and say explicitly 'yup this is how it is and men really suck a lot of the time.' Loved what they chose to do with Bilquis though, and makes total sense after the first and second episodes where we see her using lovey-lovey-swipe-match (was watching afterbuzz tv and Yetide was laughing because they werent allowed to call in tindr). And thats not something Gaiman could have included in his book either (smart phones were a number of years away in 2001) so it was awesome seeing technological advances woven more and more into the narrative. Also loved her backstory, especially the Tehran scene and rise of Ayatollah, and how Iran was not always as its perceived today. Chenoweth as Easter really surpassed expectations. She's such a tiny woman physically but she has such a presence on screen that she owns the role. Watching her start to crack and lose her shit with Wednesday was great and i loved Shadow's boyish infatuation when he looked at her. And the confrontation scene where she takes the harvest was brilliant. Sweeny and Laura did not disappoint. First of just want to say that the way they showed Easter finding out why Laura died, with the retinal imprint, was really cool. Loved how it looked. Then Laura "shucking peas" with Mad Sweeny And ending in thenperfect place, imo, with Laura showing herself to Wednesday just as Wednesday thinks Shadow is his. Great acting all around but really liked McShane's facial expressions when Laura pops up. Like "But damnot Dead Wife i was so close!" The series hasnt disappointed me. I think its something new and different on the current TV landscape and has come out at an especially relevant time. Hope it gets its well deserved Emmys, both technical awards and acting. It deserves them

Finally watched the season finale. The opening with Bilquis was stunning...tying her into modern events (the destruction of her temple by ISIS)was genius. I think Gaiman's ideas for the new gods was ahead of it's time even if he could not foresee the technology advances between the publishing of the book and airing of the show. I agree with the focus on the 4 Queens was such a smart idea: Bilquis, Easter, Laura, Media..all strong actresses and Chenowith has such a strong screen presence, she was perfect for Easter. Also liked Jeremy Davies as Jesus. Mc Shane was terrific in the scene where he reveals who he is and seeing Laura at the end. Be curious as to what happens when she reveals all to Shadow. Since Laura, as of right now, cannot be resurrected...do you think the show keeps her around for a long time?As she's starting to rot more and more...or will there be divine intervention for her eventually?

Re: Laura I think she'll stick around - she's in the novel till the end after all, and this adaptation is doing that rare thing of adding rather than cutting book material. I think she'll be in for the long run. Maybe she cuts a deal with Wednesday where he brings her back in return for her encouraging Shadow to stick with him. Actually no that doesn't sound likely. But I have faith they'll do something clever.

stoneheartsrevenge, I meant to reply to you yesterday and the kids wanted something, so I had to log off.. Anyway, thank you for your answer and you got me thinking if they do something with Laura that they did with Bilquis. Spoiler speculation below Maybe Shadow, even after finding out Wednesday's role in Laura's death, still chooses Wednesday and Laura teams up with the new gods who help restore her??? I don't know where this leaves Mad Sweeney in my speculation...but just throwing it out there.
